New Product
79'' Grumman Goose , lasercut plan-free build amphibious airplane

Hello fellow model airplane builders and enthusiasts ,

Behind the screens i have been working on a new aircraft design. I was inspired by Zeke's Albatross and wanted to do something like that. The Grumman Goose is a long time favorite of mine so this was to be the next project.
The pictures of Warhead71 foam build goose in the catalina seaplanes livery really impressed me. Gary (GLM) also got excited as soon as i made the first 3d drawings so the decision was made to go ahead with it.

Some goals for the aircraft were :

- Large. (large aircraft simply fly better)

- Easy to transport and store

- No need for large motors and batteries

- Functional landing gear and flaps

- Build without plans.

With all that in mind i started the cad work. One of the biggest challenges was to design a retract system that could be home made. This took an enormous of time but eventually it got it done.

The goose has a wingspan of 2 meters. It has 2 Turnigy G10 810kv outrunners on a 3s system.

In post two i'll start with explaining how the aircraft is build. Gary (GLM) is to start his thread in the waterplanes forum.

Link to the webpage on Gary's website : http://morganmill.com/RC/Grumman_Goose.html

Here are some videos to start with :

Maiden flight :

Maiden flight (3 min 52 sec)

2nd flight , windy conditions and rouch water this time:

RC Grumman Goose , 2nd flight (5 min 18 sec)

3rd flight , driving up the ramp at the end of the video.

Grumman Goose 3rd Flight (7 min 48 sec)

Sea-trials :

Sea trials (2 min 36 sec)

Retract design animation :

Gear animation (0 min 42 sec)

Landing gear test :

Gear test 3 (0 min 29 sec)

System test :

RC Grumman Goose systems test (1 min 42 sec)

Video's on Vimeo for those who have no acces to youtube :

Grumman Goose maiden flight (3 min 51 sec)

2nd Flight (5 min 17 sec)

Hope you all like my design ,

Bart

The build starts . . . .

As mentioned in the previous post i shall start showing the build here. All the build photo's you are about to see are from my prototypebuild.
Prior to each series of build pictures i show the manual page refering to the build phase. The manual page show's the revised design. Also the the build sequense is shown as i have made it in the new manual. The protoype was build in another sequense so sometimes the pictures dont fully correnspond to the manual page.

Were gonna start with one of the difficult phases , the gear parts.

Cheers,

Bart

Very nice, I have been thinking about a retract mechanism for a friends Catalina.

From the last picture in your post I assume you have already maidened it. Does this mean you are close to releasing it?

WOOOHOOO! Yeah Bart and Gary!! Waterproofing the retract bays will be a real trick. I guess I don't have to look for a winter project,
it's here just in time for Xmas!

Bart, Oh yes, this will definitely fit under the tree!

Before you get too far with this may I suggest an option for
retractable tip floats?

Bart you are awesome...I raise my hat to you and Gary. That retract is so neat, and the planless build so clever. I wish I was a Goose fan!

Nice work, Bart!

The gear assembly including the box is really nice.

Funny how much your bigger Goose sounds like mine. I get the same beat frequency. That's part of her character
