Help!
PBY colour scheme

My winter project is a pre-war PBY.

I'm looking for a good colour scheme.

There's a problem; all the contemporary photos are in black & white.

Peter-
What version PBY are you doing? PBY 5A? I have collected hundreds of pictures of the PBY from the 2 model through the 5A model and may be able to help.

PBY-1............ rounded rudder...........no blisters.

I am looking for a scheme with a mostly-yellow wing top surface.

This came from the Aircraft In Profile on the Catalina.

I have the Profile, so if you want a better copy, please PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

If you'd like to do the PBY as a 2 model, I've always like the following scheme with the yellow wing and diamond pattern on the rudder. I built a small (48" span) PBY-2 with this color scheme about 15 years ago which now hangs in the local hobby shop. I am still at work but can check on the home computer later and see what else I have.

I scanned a color reference page from one of the books I have that shows a color scheme of the PBY 1 and 2. Both have yellow wings but they are only shown in profile so the upper wing markings would have to be hypothesized. It seems the wing color scheme was fairly standard with unit numbers, national insignia, and unit chevron.

Nice one,
Good ol' Jaques Coustea, I used to love watching his shows.
Never saw the plane though - I missed out I think.

More images of his PBY can be found with a websearch. I think Revell made a decal sheet/kit - probably before the wreck
His son Phillipe was killed when he crashed this PBY in portugal (1978), apparently just ripped the plane up in high speed taxi/takeoff run looking for leaks after a hard landing.
