Question
Recommended affordable first scale model - 2.5-3.2m

Looking for suggestions on a decent quality 2.5-3.2m modern era scale sailplane.
Suited for slope flying.

Wanting to be realtively low price, and have some form of landing brake method, either Flaps for Crow or Spoiler/dive brakes.

Thanks

OK, I'll start this off.
First of all, this question comes up several times a year, so you may want to search this forum for "first scale sailplane" or something like that.

"decent quality" "relatively love price"
you can have one or the other, or mediocre both

quite subjective terms: what is your price range?

slope flying = it doesn't have to be too light and or very efficient (vs. thermal flying where the opposite is better)
what kind of slope? Big air? Smooth, steady, fly handlaunch air? Rocks, or good landing area? Looking for speed or more gentle flying?

modern design: because of price you are looking for a foam core wing with obeche or balsa covering; there are several small molded models, see Icare below, depending on your definition of "low price"

lots of cheap crap out there from Asia, at low prices
to get some idea of good quality and the pricing that goes with it, check out:

Give us more info, do some homework, and others will probably jump in with their opinions.

Ok sorry I was a bit vague with my question.

I live in Australia so shipping is a consideration.
Price range would be ideally under AUD$350, but up to $500 is do-able. This is just for the airframe. Obviously I'd prefer as good quality as is possible with the money.

My home slope generally has smooth air with anything from light to booming slope and thermal lift depending on conditions. Anything from 12-15kts is enough to keep most models airborne.
LZ is open grass, and mostly flat. No trees

Flying style, anything capable of basic aerobatics, ie loops, rolls, wing overs, stall turns. And I may do the occasional speed run (who doesn't)

In case there is confusion "modern design" refers to the model type rather than build materials. Eg ASW/K, DGs etc and not K8s, MiniMoas etc.

I'll have a look at the provided links and see what there is.
I'm happy with quirky Chinese models as long as the required modifications needed aren't massive.and that they won't just crumble on takeoff. Lately Chinese models seem to be improving somewhat but there are plenty of duds as well

Hi Slothy, have you had a look at glidermania in qld? They have a number of smaller modern around the $500-$600 mark.

Thanks Lunns,

I have come across them, and am keeping them as an option.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shink,

I have done the searches, and there isn't as many threads as you'd like to think. Also many of them are from 4+ years ago, so not overly relevant with half the links not working.

And the other half are about 5+m stuff. The sites you mentioned have some nice options, but being in Australia, I'm already adding $100+ extra just in shipping.

For that sort of $ the only ones I know about are the Flyfly brand. Range around 2.6 to 4m and $200-450.
This appears the be the Aus dealer

Have a look at the Seagull Pilatus B4 it might be worth adding to your list. Mine flies very nice from the slope and flat (aerotow).

The spoilers work well, but I found the supplied linkage difficult to make up so replaced it with threaded rod. The only other change I made was to swap the aerotow release for Multiplex one.

I was looking at the seagull pilatus, until I saw this post: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=30

Doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence

Thanks for the link Lester. I had been looking at Hobby88 for fly fly, but Aussie distributors are good

Ah I hadn't seen that but mine has been fine and a friend has also got an earlier one, he knocked the nose off on a landing (the later versions are stronger) but neither of us has suffered from wing failure, but maybe I'm not trying hard enough

Shame you probably can't get the Pat Teakle Salto where you are http://www.patteaklegliders.co.uk/328313680 as tough as old boots, seen one stall in from 30ft (admittedly the ground was fairly soft) and it could have flown again., my 25 year old HP18 is just undergoing a refurb, the Salto would have given you the aerobatic capability you are looking for.

I have that one. 6+ lbs when loaded.
Are you looking for FG/comp or a forgiving foam?
Here is a 2.2m foam that fly's really well. Just scroll down to the third one.
The windrider Swift S1 which I have also.

Definitely not looking at a full foam glider. I've had my share of foam, and much prefer something glassed.

Tbh if I wanted foam there's plenty of HK foam scalies to choose from.

Also the Tangent Asw27b is a nice kit. I had one ten years ago and flies very nicely on the slope.http://www.tangent-modelltechnik.de/TA_ASW27B.html
