Looks like an Astroflight motor. I'm planning to use one on a submarine piston ballast tank. Great motor.

December 2012 Udate

Not much going on now, in fact I have not been able to do anything since Oshkosh.

I have had to concentrate on other business ventures that actually bring in money.

Since I am still the only one working on this and no investors have surfaced, it looks like things will still progress slowly.

If I was to go back working on this full time again I estimate another 6 months till I have the electronics where I would be happy with them.

The biggest problem I need to solve is to have a reliable mosfet power switch that I can control with a 5v signal and which switches up to 300 amps at 50v. I am lacking experience on this and I welcome input from anyone with a solid solution for this.

I hope to take the Oshkosh plane down to Texas this winter yet for further flight testing.

If the mosfets are part of your BMS you may check with a solar racing team. Some of them such as the University of Michigan build their own BMS and may be able to help. We are all in the same boat when it comes to the BMS.

I've been looking into the PL-8 for use in charging the batteries in our solar powered car. Unfortunately we can't afford to buy one.
The current plan for charging our lipos is to connect them directly to a variable power supply. My gut feeling is that this is going to end badly.

You may struggle to find a big enough single MOSFET to meet your needs. However for an on/off switch application there's no problem paralleling (they share current nicely when paralleled & there are no 2nd breakdown or early effect worries). If you used say 10 parallel IRFP4568PBF from IR, that's 0.6mohm RDSon. 300A through that lot is just over 5W each dissipation & would take up about 2 square inches of board space.
Dealing with 300A in a PCB trace is another problem, but not insurmountable I don't think; I've seen professional equipment with >100A in a 1inch wide PCB trace, that would be on 4oz. copper; & you have 2 or maybe 4 layers to play with.

There is a electronic device called "opto-isolators" to drive huge electric power from microcontrollers.
