Question
Schooner Hatch

Ok heres another question.

In the picture below. Item 10. Would this have been an opening in the deck for bringing supplies aboard?

What is the purpose of the grating?

Was this sealed from below? I mean was it just removable grating over a hole? Or was there something else going on here?

Was this a locker on the deck to store rope and what not? And not open to the area below?

I have so many questions.

To my understanding gratings are for ventilation and are usually made removable for access below decks to move about furniture, stores, cargo etc.

...and made heavy and stout enough to walk on, store boats, spars, while providing said ventilation, and light. They also allow drainage, like up in the head, inside the ships boats, etc - where you need a floor to stand on that the water will run through and drain away.

I learned from a friend about 20 years ago, who's no longer with us here, that they also had brackets around the outsides of the hatchways (coaming) that could have battens, made of wood, fit in. Canvas was stretched over the hatch & grating, then the battens were placed and hammered down to make a water tight seal.... this was known as "battening down the hatches".... Gee--- where have we heard that before?

I built my hatches with clear plastic behind them so they look open, but are actually sealable.

Ya I cheated. I have a block of wood with the grating glued over that. Then the edging all around to make it look like one piece. The whole thing will be afixed to the deck in the end product.

Ya, its going to get some stain. I have the Museum picture of the Gabled Skylight. So I kinda plan to stain the cockpit, skylight and hatch all the same.
