Foshan is a nice place for modelers. Lots to be found in the area but I will take the mountains surrounding Xihu anyday!

These are the models of those steamers use to sail on Yangtze River back in the early 1900. Based on some of photo took during my fathers job relocation of construction projects in Shanghai. I design and scratch build with FRP hull and 1/8" marine plywood.

Nice to see some obscure subjects like that being modeled. The only thing I've remotely seen are the occasional gunboats from the 1930s.

You might want to consider one of the old river ferries that ran across the Huangpu in their day. Reminds me of a smaller version of the Star Ferry further down the coast in Hong Kong.

Back in 30s some of American [B]pageant class gunboats use to petrol on Yangtze river. Just like the one in Hollywood movie which acted by one of my favorite star Steve McQueen back to 70s?
Truly right, it will be great idea to build that dark green double-deck Star Ferry vessel, which I use to commute to go work for 2 years between Koolong apartment and HK Branch office in 70s. Besides, prior to present converted diesel powered boats, like old timer it use to run by steam.

Yangtze Gunboats

For those interested in the Yangtze gunboats, Osprey has a decent book on the subject that covers the little known history of western naval operations on China's vital inland trade route.

There's a thread over on MBM from a gent in South Africa who's seeking information towards building HMS Sandpiper.

Thank for your effort of searching info. Still, I prefer merchant ship to gunboat. The gunboat reminds me of an old song "龍的傳人".
One of the most beautiful and popular songs that reflect to the peacefully Yangtze river in China.
Tks

Steam junk sounds interesting, but I've never come across any illustrations or photos other than this creative example.

That said, you'll find some interesting reading regarding the history of early steam power in China in this academic paper which should bring us full circle to the original post's topic.
