It starts with an idea, becomes a lot of rude words, but ends in a smile .

I wanted sort of scale(ish), (very very ,ish), retract legs for a Lancaster(ish) model I am scratch building.

After some head scratching on how to mod a pair of HK servoless retracts with big ugly legs, so that they have Lanc like twin legs, I decided I should retire to my garage where I have a big steel vice and collection of hammers.

A lot of noise and a lot of those rude words, plus a hack saw, and a small propane torch, I have,............ well something sort of resembling roughly what I wanted.

The smile at the end ?. Well I made them with my own hands, no power tools, CAD, CNC machines, and I am darn chuffed about it.

Making things yourself, how ever good or not, is great. Hence my post.

Hell, those look great!!
It's my opinion that all to many people have just lost the--- lets call it creativity to just go out and make something from scratch.. I grew up learning you just can't buy everything you want/need, so you make it-- .

You, sir, are the first one I've read from that actually admitted to the "harsh words" part of the creative process. I thank you for your honesty and hope that it'll make others finally admit that they have a problem.

Hello. My name is Bruce. I swear a lot in the shop when things aren't going right.

Oddly enough I feel a little better now. Thanks!

Great looking struts Ray! I've found that a few pieces of different diameter aluminum tubing slipped over the legs make very convincing-looking oleos.

...and my wife knows I'm about to ascend from my basement workshop when she hears me curse "Son-of-a-b#%*!!!!!" Everything is easier after I sleep on it!

It wouldn't be such fun if it was easy.

(I keep telling myself).

Like Bruce- I'm glad someone just came out and SAID it ! I too, have been known to use some choice swear words, and maybe even having invented one or two.

I don't think it's something I'd want to give up, though.

Well for me the actual process of making tends to calm me down... it's when I can't find my tools or a part I thought I had that the air turns blue.

I take a bash at something with a hammer, hit my thumb, and SWEAR! No problem.
