Hi Group:

Just started building a Wing Warrior Raider to fly at the cliffs at the
ocean here in the San Diego area. This is my first glider and it came highly
recommended. A couple of questions:

1. The instructions show the radio, batteries, etc as recessed into the wing
and covered with packing tape and then ultracote. It sorta bothers me to see
the equipment covered. What happens if the battery goes bad, etc.? Has
anyone devised a method of making a "lid" over the equipment that could be
removed if needed?

2. They also indicate that I should "goop" the servos into their recesses.
Does this harm the servos and can the goop be easily removed or peeled off?

Steve, to protect your equipment from harm, wrap it in electrical tape,
then goop or glue it in place. That way, if you ever need to remove it, you
can just cut the tape. Its a simple solution that works well, with little
weight penalty. To make a lid, you can cut the hole a bit wider and deeper
than your equipment, goop or glue your gear in place and glue a couple of
balsa rails on either side of the hole, then put a piece of balsa over the
hold and put a couple of small screws through the cover into the rails.
That is just an idea, not something I have done or seen done in a foamie.

Then you cut the covering, pull the stuff out, replace it, then put a
patch in place. If you want it to look pretty, you cover it with
ultracote again. If you don't care, packing tape works well.

(Note that the slopes are FULL of people who don't care

This stuff doesn't fail often in a glider. Don't worry too much about
it.

Yes, you can make a hatch, but it's important to keep it well secured
in there -- you don't want a hatch that can break open in a crash or a
mid-air (you'll have lots of mid-air collisions on the slope.
Sometimes they're accidental, but sometimes people do it on purpose
and call it combat

Cover it in packing tape first. Then it peels off if needed.

If it's not too late, make sure you get metal gear servos. The
HS-81MG servos are a great choice, and are only $23 each at
servocity.com. Metal gear servos will last for a very long time.
Nylon gear servos don't fare so well in a slope flying wing -- the
plane can take lots of abuse, but the servos won't.
