Hacker Motor For P-51

I plan on building a Brian-Taylor P-51, wing span 69 inches, weight about 10 lbs. What Hacker motor would be recommended - the A-50 or A-60 series of motors?

realize its not the same bird--but read mikes thread--the esm is roughly the same weight and measurements and his is hacker powered.

I would think the A50 series would be nice. Btw, I've built and flown 2 mustangs from Brian's plans. Very nice and in my opinion the best looking model in the air of the mustang despite its smaller size. Let me know if you have any questions regarding the build.

Thanks guys for the info. Looks like the A-50 will work. Smaller battery packs lighter. Also, what do you think of these E-Flite motors? This one might be the right size, not sure. Do these motors hold up as well as a Hacker?

Not sure, haven't trusted any other motor other than Hacker yet.

Here's a couple pics of my two Brian Taylor scratchbuilt Mustangs. Both the 69" version, both powered by Enya 1.20 4-strokes. There are a couple things I'd change but not many. Brian does a really nice job.

Your P-51s look great. Nice job. What retracts would you recommend and whose canopy will fit? I don't think Brian-Taylor sells the canopies anymore.

I used Unitracts mechanical retracts on mine as they are designed for the BT Mustang. I think they offer them in a pneumatic version too which would be easier to use for sure. I'd recomend supporting the shaft that the leg pivots on, it's a cantilever design to get the pivot close to the leading edge per scale but it's a weak point. See pictures of how I know.

I made my own tailwheel retract per the dwgs on the plans.

Another potentional weak spot is at the rear of the cowl along the fuselage side. Mine broke on the second one during and heavy landing. It's an easy fix with ply doubler inside the fuse.

Thanks again. The landing gear seems to be a problem area. I have had the plans blown up to an 80" wing span. This will give me better options as for a spinner, canopy (can be bought from Tower). Robart 630 retracts should fit will and I think I will go with the A60 hacker motor. Should handle better for take offs. I've been viewing your Corsair project. Your craftsmanship is top notch and ideas. Do you think the A60 will fly this plane with good performance?

Sorry Tom, I didn't realize you were enlarging the BT plan. You're right the A50 would not be large enough.
Not sure what canopy you're looking at but if its for the top flite mustang you may be creating quite a job for yourself. The TF cockpit is too short for 1/5 scale and is about 1/4 scale in width.
You may have better luck using an aerotech canopy or one for the CJM Mustang. Just a thought.
Another point about the BT plan is that the whole nose is a fiberglass cowling. Which is really nice as it saves a ton of work and affords a lot of access. The down side is that your plan won't show this area with any formers etc for you to build from.
It may be less trouble to go with the TF kit or ARC and use an after market cowl to correct the nose shape. I think there are two available on the market.
Please post your progress as you embark on your build. Thanks for the generous comments regarding the corsair, it was a fun little project. Hope to run it up this week and see what numbers I get from the A60 motor.

I'm sure you are aware but there is the A-60 S, M and L you want the L for a larger warbird.
I have the A60- 16L (168 KV) with a 24x14 prop on a 17.5 pound 30% extra it is a stump puller and on 12s 5000 will out perform a DA 50cc gas engine...at 4500 watts

I would myself want to go faster with a P-51.. so I would bring up the KV and go with the A60-14L (192 KV) then adjust your prop size to give you the speed and vertical you are looking for..
The 22x10 or 12 would be safe place to start
for more speed less vertical try a 21x14 or 20x12 you could also mess with 10s or 12s but I would think if your over 20 pounds you need 12s

all of that is my opinon..lol

I think an A60 S will do fine if you are about 10lbs flying weight. I have an A60 14L in my H9 P-47 with 20x10 and was running some TP Extremes (10S) that were ready to kick the bucket and still had good performance. I haven't weighed it, but I think it's about 17lbs. With new packs I have and a 21x14, I should see a big improvement in performance.

IMHO 10 lbs is more realistic for the 69" span Taylor Mustang, not one at 80" or more.

Missed that part. Looks like I'll agree with Ron and suggest an A60 L as it'll be 20+lbs as a rough guess.
