I have a new unbuilt carbon Sisu wing I would be willing to part with. Sal probably has a fuselage and plans to sell you. Now that I think of it, I have built up stab and rudder that could go with the wing. In fact the whole rudder and stab end of the fuselage should go too.

This seems to be the only thread going on this plane.. OK, maybe "going" is a strong term. Hope there might be some folks that can shed some light on things for me.

I picked up one of these planes a while back here on RC Groups. I sadly can not say it was in good condition, and the build quality suggests that this particular plane never enjoyed a good life. I put it up on a shelf and tried to forget about how much money I had payed for the wreck. Well, I pulled it down the other day and decided it is time to give her some attention.

I originally thought I would be able to do some repairs here and there, but the more I inspected, the more I realized this would be a total rebuild. The original builder must have had a glue sponsor and a dull axe to build with. I think I have ground and sanded off about a pound of glue, wood, spray foam and paint off the fuse. OK, that might be an exaggeration, but you get the idea.

The bad news - She has some major fuse damage, and a crease in one wing panel. The good news is that the fuse repair is all in the wing saddle, and should be pretty easy to fix. The wing will be a pretty easy repair also. I think stripping all of the gunk and glue out of the inside will be the worst part.

I'll see about posting some photos up that I took.

I'll be using the plane as a sermal (slope thermal) ship for the lighter wind days. I do not expect her to do any more winch launches.

So, anyone know the CG for this plane? Any tips and tricks to share?

Photos..

Got a little more work on it tonight. I went to remove the rudder as the elevator bellcrank needs some love. Turns out that it was glued in very well either. For as much glue as this plane had all over, it is amazing how poorly everything was glued in. Go figure.

Anyone have an ideas on how to get the spray foam out of the tail boom? Looks like the whole thing is filled. I picked out about 5 inches worth so far.. It is getting really tough to get out as the tail boom necks down.

Went back to the garage and decided to risk putting a bent piece of metal in the drill and run that down the fuse. It was a little risky, but managed to clear some of the foam out of the tail boom. Also got the elevator pushrod working, and ripped out the rudder pushrod completely, it was rusted and in bad shape. Sanded out some more glue chunks so I can glass the fuse back together.

She is much lighter now, and actually feels about right for weight. I'd still love to get the rest of the foam out of there, but I guess it can stay.

I think I can just about start building this plane now.. The demolition period is just about finished.

See if you can disolve the foam out with something.... maybe acetone or gasoline?

Yeah, my acetone can was empty so I tried some paint thinner. Nothing. I have melted white foam with gas before and it leaves a nasty sticky mess behind.

I think I figured out a simple tool I can make to scrape out more of the foam. I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

I have managed to create a Sisu kit from a built plane. The fuse has been gutted, sanded in and out and repaired. OK, I still need to make a repair to the wing, but that should be easy.

I actually had to cut apart the fuse at the old break as the previous repair resulted in a bent fuselage. I think she had about 4 degrees of rudder built into the fuse.

Patched the wing up last night. I used a 180 degree monokote iron to heat the foam, and it went back to its original shape pretty well. Then I floxed in some carbon around the crack. Tested her out this morning and she is very strong. Just need to make it pretty now.

Is this plane still regarded as one of the 2m class leaders?

No, I would not think so. Unless maybe in some vintage class.
