AF,

A spark-ignition engine need the compressed air-fuel mixture in the cylinder (combustion chamber) ignited by a spark, in each and every complete cycle of the engine.

...So, obviously, if you disconnect the battery (or the whole ignition system) from the spark-plug, the engine will cease to run...

In a glow engine, you only heat the glow-plug's coil with a battery for starting.
After it is running, the platinum coil remains glowing hot, due to catalytic reaction of the platinum on the methanol in glow fuel.

See this video to understand how hot platinum becomes, just from spraying methanol on it and without any power being provided...

AF,

Just take note; some smaller gas engines do not have a needle bearing con-rod, or a ringed piston...
Engines that don't cannot survive if run on 50:1 gas-oil mix; they need a 20:1 to 25:1 mix.

In this respect, do what the manufacturer says.
