My old cox P-47 flew for the first time in years today. I have been working on a project in the basement and saw the "Jug" sitting in the corner so I had a look. She was in pretty decent shape so I decided to get her in the air. I had original glued a GWS RX in behind the servos so I had to perform a bit of surgery to get it out and then I installed a FrSky V8-R4II in there. Way back when I had installed a Hacker A20-34S in her with a Hacker X7 ESC and since she had a broken 7X3.5 on there I switched out to a 5X3. I charged a couple 500mah 2 cell packs and I ran out to the field today at lunch. I fired her up and gave her a toss.........and off she went. She is no powerhouse but flew fine. there was a bit of breeze so I quickly learned that you have to keep the speed up down wind if you want any rudder authority but she looked great in the air and was practically silent as she flew by. I flew both packs to the 7 minute mark that I had the timer set to in the P-47 slot and just plugged a pack in and it was still showing 53% charge so this set up is not using a lot of juice.

I still have a NIB Zero in the attic so now I am thinking of doing a light weight build using something like a 1811 2900K motor and more modern (i.e. lighter) ESC and smaller servos and get it in under 4oz.

Sorry to see these little planes go away, they look great and are super fun.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim, My old P47 resides on the fridge most of the time but I drag it out once in a while just to keep the cobwebs out of it. Getting very war worn but still flies like like the real one.

Gord.

These birds are timeless. Wish they didn't discontinue them.

i had the Atomic Zero up for a few flights just the other day. i put the speed prop on, a new lipo and dang..... Forgot how fast the little rascal is. Very brisk unlimited vertical, howling the whole way. Normal flight is a 6x4, 6x5.5 is a hoot.

Got a couple more flight in on the Jug this morning. Not a lick of breeze....She looked great in the air.

Cheers,
