3D Printer (FDM)

I just ordered a 3D FDM Printer, I plan on using for some interesting RC Bike stuff coming up.
Great for Prototyping...

Works with ABS & PLA, for now.

Been out of bikes for a while and plan on getting back into it now. Have a few projects to finish up also.

Laz,

Which one did you get? I've had an Ultimaker here for about the past 9 months or so.

Has a build envelope of a little over 8" x 8" x 8".

I've got PLA prototypes of several R/C bike parts as well as my crazy little active rider project for the "Active" steering control bike. Just not as much time lately to make enough progress to show.

I hope I am not spoiling this. I had a vendor with a professional machine
that works with the same process (dimension 1200).
I tried ABS on my parts (JABBER). ABS does not withstand most thinners.
The problem with ABS is that the threads are quickly stripped. Further if you
make the holes for the bearings for a tight fit ABS cracks after a short while.
Its a bit too brittle. I had to shelve parts for 5 bikes and the complete design
in the rubbishbin.
My experience with PLA parts made with this process is similar. When I must
say I did not use those parts for bikes.

Please keep us updated how it works out for you.

Yea, I'm aware of ABS' limitations. I would use the Nylon 11 or 12 SLS materials for any production stuff, that stuff is bullet proof. I immersed a test tank fully for 2 years in RC nitro and found 0 degradation and the parts are strong! I have some uses in mind.
And, yes, I am really thinking about producing a short run bike for sale this year, since I mentioned production...

Yeah, the PLA parts aren't the strongest, but might work in some conditions at least for short term usage. I've got some ABS here, but haven't tried it out yet as I hear it gives off some pretty nasty fumes.

It is nice being able to quickly spit out a (sometimes rough) physical representation of something you've designed w/o having to go though the time and hassle of making one on the mill or lathe.

Had the Makerbot Replicator been available early last year when I ordered this one I probably would have gone with that. I almost bought an Up! printer, but it's build volume is only about a 4.5" - 5" cube. I wanted to do larger parts so I jumped on the Ultimaker when I saw it. This one is made somewhere in the Netherlands.

The Netfab software blows away ReplicatorG / Skeinforge as far as speed goes, but it still has other issues that need to be resolved. The Ultimaker can also print much faster than the Makerbot machines because the extruder motor is mounted on the back, but the bowden-type extruder leaves much to be desired as far as stringing and jamming goes. (I'm strongly considering building an alternate feed mechanism for my printer - just need to find the time.)

Would be interesting to compare prints with you one day...
