Just finished the new keel. Weights 662gr. New total displacement just below 990gr. Cool. 😄😄😄

Only problem is I won't have opportunity to sail in weeks! Winter time here: low temps and calm air.

Updates:
  • #1 make the hull watertight: DONE
  • #2 simplifying the rig: DONE
  • #3 lighter keel: DONE

So I went to my first formal racing ever After 4 rounds I was third out of seven boats. Not bad, and only two rounds to go. And then DISASTER. Boat was rigged on stand on top of a table, when a gust came and it fell down to the floor... Keel came through the hull

Damage assessment: could have been worse. Hull: almost no damage. Tray and keel box came out of place. Mast box: no damage. Keel & rudder: no damage. Keel box: no damage. Tray: lost. Electronics: no damage. Rig: no damage.

What I have learnt: Keep the damn thing on the floor!!!

So, bad times are times of opportunity: I already had detected that the mast step is too wide, allowing the mast to jiggle sideways. Also, already decided what the best position for the mast is, so I don't need an adjustable keel box anymore. To-Do:
  • #4: replace mast box with a simple carbon tube at the correct position. Use tube of proper internal diameter to eliminate mast jiggle.
  • #5: rebuild whole interior (keel box, tray & electronics), correcting some details, like winch position (to allow more sheet travel).
  • #6: new sails (current ones proved not so bad, but I still do not like the material)

And finally, I scored fourth out of seven boats, even not racing the last 2 rounds... not bad... encouraging, actually! I am still learning....

Would be interested in knowing what designs the RG's are down there.
Stay warm.

Take a look here for the registered fleet: http://www.cvrc.cl/clases/flota-clase-rg65/

I have yet to add a design column to the results...

Results updated. I added the boat design to them... Will do it in the future, too, now that I learned how! ha.
