Me-109 E - Mini PSS from scratch
Since I had read an interesting thread here in RC Groups that was speaking about building a fuselage by using a hot wire saw, i wanted to give it a try.
The Messerschmitt Bf-109 and specialy the model E (Emil) is one of my favorite WWII fighter and i wanted to build one since a long long time.
i also seen the wonderful slope soaring videos of beautiful correx warbirds in these threads :
They achieved to turn me on !
As this project is my first try at building a fuselage using a hot wire saw, i wanted to keep the building cost as low as possible, that's one of the reasons why i chose a rather small scale for my Me-109 project.
The other reason is that unfortunately, the slopes near home are far to be as good and efficient as the South african ones.
Our slopes are paved with big rocks and small trees but they are good enough to allow light weighted foamy gliders to fly often.
We also have the chance to have a field where we can land our bigger gliders down the slope, but nothing above 2.50 meter span.
I fixed the Scale around 1:16
It given me : 59cm long and 65 cm span - stretched to 74 cm to increase wing surface.
Mid September :
i started once again my old "Turbo Cad-LE" to design my own Me-109
Early october : I started to cut the first templates

To build my templates, I used a die cut of 3mm mdf.
Well... i used what i had in stock, but i do not recommand to do the same :
The surface of the mdf stay rough even after sanding it with a super thin sand paper so the hot wire saw don't slide easily on them when cutting the foam and create some bumps on the fuselage parts... But Nothing which cannot be recorked by some filler anyway.

I thought the canopy template would be an easy thing to do, but i was wrong : I spent a lot of time trying to find the correct outline of this paper template.
I hope to be able to build a clear canopy...
The front part of fuselage and the spinner are made with slices of 6mm Depron stuck on a 3mm mdf and 1.5 mm light plywood "skeleton".
The elevator is make with 6mm depron.

The spinner was a bit too long and it did not pleased me.
I shortened it at a better size, then i started to build and add some "scale details" on the fuselage.
A clear Canopy have been cut but i still don't know how i will be able to stuck the front parts together.
May be i will try foam friendly contact glue or someclear silicone..
(any idea somebody ?)

i would like to keep the wing load as low as possible...
At this time, the plane's weight is 66 gr. (fuselage + 3 rough wings pannels)
I would like to reach an AUW around 100gr but i'm rather sure that it will not be possible :
I plan to use a very light weigh Orange 2.4Ghz 4 channels DSM2 micro RX.(6gr)
1gr to 3.5 gr nano servos (3 at least - ailerons, rudder, elevator => i.e. it will add 10.5gr maxi)
I will need a 300 to 500mAh 1S Lipo (something like 20 to 30 gr i guess) to power the electronics
+ paintings / decals + push rods - may be 25 gr more ?
It depends also of the weight needed in the nose to balance the plane... The WWII warbirds generaly had heavy engine ...
it could be lighter if i use a "all in one" RX + actuators like the ones used in the E-flite micro models but... i don't have this parts in my stock parts

Here's one I'm working on. It's a Epp kit by DanWings in SoCal. It has a 30" wingspan and is a mean little PSSer at around 10oz. Pictured is Dans plane, the first one. I'll post mine in a few weeks when I finish it.

OK, since a particular local group of excellent slopers has gone power, here's my Kyosho
E50 Kyosho,60", 6 cell, fast as hell, ME 109. I guess I need to get this one going again!
