JW Digital Skins install

This thread is a how-to on applying the new Digital Skins to your JW. You will need digital skins, installation tools and a JW.

The care package consists of a knife, squeegee, glove and lint-free dust cloth. It will help with installing the digital skins, but you can substitue and xacto and credit card for the knife and squeegee. White cotton gloves work well too.

The fuse and tail skins come on a single sheet with an extra patch piece for repairs and/or covering a nose weight hole for the first flights. As you will see in the build log, you will have a few usable scrap pieces you can save for future repairs.

Skinning the tail

The tail is very easy to skin, so I recommend starting there to get accustomed to the handling properties of the material.

Before you begin, you should prepare a work area that meets the following criteria:
1. Large flat table with no obstacles in your way
2. Clean area with no dust or debris that could work its way under the skins.
3. Cool area, room temperature is ideal around 70 degrees fahrenheit. Do not try to apply the skins outside in the sun, it will be very difficult to get a satisfactory result.
4. Clean your hands and do not use any lotions or oils that could degrade the tackiness of the adhesive on the back of the skins.

After you have your work area sorted, lay out the sheet of skins and dust off both the back and front of the sheet to remove any particles. Clean any dust particles off the fin and get your tools ready. You will need scissors, razor knife and a squeegee/credit card.

Follow the sequence of photos to get quick and easy results. It takes just minutes to wrap the fin in Digital Skins:

Skinning the fuselage

The fuselage skinning process is done in a specific order to improve the durability of your install: install the top skin first, then the sides, then the bottom last. This aims all the seams up and away from the dirt when you land and will help prevent a seam from lifting. The other concept to use is to make sure all your seams point at the tail so that when you nose in for landing no dirt gets under the skin.

As with the fin, get your tools ready and clean your work area thoroughly. Use a lint-free dust cloth to clean the sheet of digital skins. Follow these steps for a professional installation:

For the fuse, it holds up well as is. If someone likes to land on sharp rocks a bunch, they can add something else as needed to act as a skid.

New wingtip finishing technique

I have the wingtip finishing technique perfected now. To eliminate the step at the wingtip where the new stuff film ends, put 1 or 2 layers of scrap digital skin material at the tip and trim along the edge of the new stuff. Use 2 layers for 10 mil and 1 layer for 5 mil. This will continue the surface of the new stuff flush around the wing tip. Now cover the wing with the digital skins and there will be no ridge at the tip. For a record build, this tchnique should make a difference in speed. I will work on a sketch to illustrate the concept.

For added durability, run a 1/4" wide strip of clear tape over the wing tip seam as insurance against peel back.
