Spd400 for Sophisticated/Gentle Lady?

I have a Sophisticated Lady that I often fly at one of the local parks. Lately I have been teaching a friend to fly with it. The park has a lot of trees that make it a pain to lay out the high start. I have toyed with the idea of adding an electric motor to it, leaning towards a speed 400. I know this is less power that would normally be used, but its light, as is the airplane, and I have it available. Has anyone tried this? I have a gear box for the motor as well, what would be a good prop sized for a 3 to 1 geared speed 400?

A 6v speed 400 geared 3:1 with an 11x8" on prop 8 cells will give you 26.1 oz's of static thrust at 15 amps..... That will take her up....but not very fast.

this depends on if you already had the gear but if you need to go out and buy this equipment i would have to say that its not worthy, the price of brushless esc are only about 30 % more these days but the motors are becoming more compariable in price

these new motors will provide more than enough power and never need to be serviced, they dont fill your fuse with dust and heat,,in the long run there are cheaper, now if only the esc prices would come down!

im sure some will try to prove me wrong but a sp 400 is not enough for a two metre floater

My Sig Riser 2M with a Phasor 15/4 and a cp1700 7 cell battery is a great combo. The GL is a similar bird.

I use the Graupner Speed 480 combination on my GL. The inline gearbox is 3.34:1, 11x8 prop, 8x800 Nicads.. Flying weight 36 oz.
It's quite a good flier.

It will work with a geared S400. I have one that someone gave me. It went up with a geared 6V motor and 7-500AR pack. I even had to use an Rx battery as my ESC didn't have BEC.

It didn't climb fast (rather slow) but would thermal well. The one thing that always bugged me was it was a bear to get the prop to fold. I usually did a couple of stalls just to make that happen. By that time it had lost a lot of altitude.

Thanks for the info guys. Sorry, I just can't bring myself to spend $200 on a power system for a $20 airplane. I think I will give the geared 400 a shot.

If you use a gearbox that calls for a clockwise spinning motor, use a Zagi reverse-timed. Also extra-good are the Graupner 6v race motors.
