Happy Canada Day! The CF1

For Canada Day, I started working on this a few months ago. Unfortunately it is windy today, and I can't get it in the air. I did have a few trial flights, and have tweaked it enough that it should fly well now. Last time I lost control, and it hit a fence when the control surfaces snagged. You can see some damage on the leaf tips. But I've fixed that problem! The really cool part about this plane is flying it 3D in a hover, so the leaf looks like it hangs in the air. I sure wish it wasn't windy today!

The "business" end

This last shot is the chuck glider, and it actually flew quite well, once I had enough weight up front. It helped me predict the CG almost perfectly!

I've attached a pdf as well. I did change the plans slightly from what you see here, I widened the tail a bit. I think everything else follows the plan. Weight is around 250grams, motor is a turnigy 2826-1350, uses 3 5 gram hxt servos wingspan 24", 2S 900mah battery, prop is 10x4.3 slowfly. When I get her in the air again, I'll try to get pics and/or video posted.

Very interesting project! Can't wait to see the flight video.
I don't see any wing spar, are you using foam board (with paper on both sides)?

BTW I have a Red Bull plane too (grounded, repairing now) :

Ya, no wing spar. I left the paper on the foambaord because it provides pretty good rigidity, and saved me painting! At 24", there is very little in the way of flex, and this is no speed demon, so I don't think a spar is necessary.

That Redbull plane continues to amaze me. Every time I fly it I expect it to fall into a bazillion pieces in the air, but it keeps holding together.

OK! Got to fly the CF1 again today, and as promised, here is the video:

CF1 flight 1 (0 min 31 sec)

I've got a longer one, but this gives you the idea. I need to tweak the thrust angles a bit, but she flies quite well for a leaf!

and some pics . . .
