New Alua

Alula r/c side-arm-launch glider at Aloft RC.

Check this out. It has a three piece wing option for folks with Smart Cars

Definitely an Alula - more fun than anybody ought to be allowed to have, with their clothes on.

Thanks for the tip. Mine's on order!

Yours, Greg

+1 on the fun part.

I learned to fly with one of the early version Alulas, back when they were EPP covered in packing tape. I wore it out to the point that Michael Richter described it as "a sack of foam".

Still have two of them, one the early version and one of the new ones.

I've known about the Alula for several years and just vaguely about this version, and suddenly have an urge to buy one after seeing that price.

Can some people give a few thoughts on the Alula and especially this version?

Thanks,
Joseph

It floats nicely. It does not roll worth a dam however I have seen some do it but the roll response is not "aerobatic". Great fun to toss and play around and hand catch. You can easly fly it in a small school yard.

I have the current version of the Alula and so do 4 of my flying buddies. They're a lot of fun to toss and try to catch some lift. I have had some pretty good thermal flights from a hand launch but I think they are a lot more at home on the slope.

There are long running Alula threads here on the HLG forum, and over on the slope forum.

They're a frickin blast! I've only had mine in the air a couple months now. I flew from 6pm until sunset tonight, in the gently sloping meadow right across the street from my house. It's usually good thermal flying there but not steep enough for dependable slope lift. But tonight the wind was just right and I could stay up for 10 - 15 min. at a time, even flying some loops and attempting some inverted flight, and able to climb right back up when I ended up low. Fantastic.

Don't be tempted to overbuild it. Build it per the instructions, with CG on the marks or a mm or 2 behind, and minimal elevator throws, and she'll fly nice. The only important mod seems to be the carbon neck reinforcement if you'll be doing hard DLG launches. It's described in the Alula threads.

It can be a little touchy to get the CG and trim dialed in, but once it's right it flies beautifully.

The RC Soaring Digest somewhere in the back copies has a bujild article on a 3 servo beast.
Mine is still sitting on the top shelf, looking wistful It's an early version, if anyone in the NW is interested, give me a PM.

I thought the 3 piece wing was interesting.
