Woodcutting - What is your favorite crosscut/bucking saw?

Hi everyone!

It's that time of year, it's cool enough to go work outside and i'll be needing some firewood for the winter. I live on a canyon wall with an abundant supply of oak above me, all i have to do is go get it.

This year i want to get some good quality woodcutting instruments. I already have a chainsaw, but i never use it, too loud, messy, and hungry for petroleum. That, and it's much more satisfying to cut by hand.

Right now i'm using a 30" carpenter's crosscut saw with 1/8" teeth, it's not ideal but if i keep it sharp, it works well enough, but i want to get something bigger and more aggressive.

What i want to know is, for all of those who cut wood, what is your favorite type and brand of crosscut bucking saw?

Not to be a Richard but do you use a horse and buggy to get to work too?

Well Rick, i walk to work, but if i needed more transportation, i'd be more willing to go the horse and buggy route than one of those dagblasted horseless carriages.

I live off grid, self sufficient, and living this lifestyle gives me the freedom that comes with independence, but it also means that i'm the one responsible for my own existence and the quality thereof. I make my own power, cut my own wood, and grow food instead of playing games to be awarded the privilege of struggling to pay a mountain of bills. It's around 90% more efficient to work cutting wood and gardening for 5 hours a week to have plenty, than to slave for 50 hours a week for abject poverty. Work smart, not hard.

Now, what's your favorite crosscut saw?

Kinda figgered you might be off-grid. Cross-cut's too much work for me so I burn dinosaurs.

I guess nobody else here cuts wood.

Anyway, i ordered a Bahco Ergo 36" bow saw with the dry wood blade, it seems like a quality saw, and hopefully it's better than the hardware store junk, and at $30 it don't cost much more either.

The 20th century is SO overrated!

That, and it's a much more enjoyable task without a 2 stroke motor screaming in my face, i HATE my chainsaw, and i'm actually faster with a GOOD crosscut saw than with that infernal machine. I might just build a big plane or heli out of the chainsaw.

What part of the country are you in, btw. Cool avatar too.

Living the way you do, not much of the gloom and doom affects your groovy, does it? I'm rural too in a small mountain valley and a 24 hour manned gate.

Bear Valley Springs? I've been there, beautiful place!

I'm in southeast AZ, in the sky islands of the Mule Mountains, Bisbee

Well, if your Timber Bear is tuned and razor sharp, you might beat me. I'm faster by hand than with my Mini Mac though, and my 19th century crosscut takes 99% less maintainence, and as long as i have a good file to go with it, it'll stay sharp well into the Mad Max days.
