AV8b / GR 9 Harrier Full fuse depron parkjet

Hi guys, I've been developing my Harrier design on my blog and it had its first maiden on Saturday, so I thought I'd share it.

Here's the video :-

Harrier GR MK9 / AV8b II (3 min 41 sec)

This is the plane :-

Harrier first build (1 min 23 sec)

My plans are on my blog page.

I've now just got to finish it!

Thanks. I admire Steve Shumates work as his attention to detail and construction guides makes it a joy to build his planes. I try to follow his example in case anyone fancies a go at building one of mine.

First practical Harrier plan for depron

Thanks Craig for posting this plan.

The Harrier fuselage is a bit of a nightmare to model in foam and your interpretation is the most practical that I have come across to date. I had stopped building over the last few months as the weather in the North of Ireland hasn't been kind to us but your plan renewed my interest.

I'm about 75% through the build having incorporated a couple of amendments to suit my building style and my clubs flying site, such as not using a fully flying stabiliser (grass too long), and adding flaps.

I may well have missed it but I couldn't see where the CoG would be. Can you offer any advice from your experience?

Hi Colin,

You are most welcome!

Your model looks great!! Thanks for trying my design, I really hope you have lots of fun with your plane.

I had forgotten to add the CG position to the drawing after the maiden.

The CG is really easy - it is on the point at which the main bulkhead 'tab' slots into the underbelly. The trick is getting enough weight forward to compensate for the motor being so far back. I ended up putting 5g of nose weight on mine to help.

Anyway I've updated the plans on my blog now. Thanks for asking.

What paint scheme are you thinking of doing?

Cheers

Craig

an afterthought - if you are using the flaps only as flaps and not as flaperons, you may want to increase the control surface of the ailerons - I am not sure what the impact on the roll rate would be..

Thanks for the update on the CoG, Craig.

Colour scheme: See attached pic. Green/Dark Grey on top with Light Grey underneath. Good contrasting surfaces which will make it easier to see against our grey skies. No roundels on the wing undersides which is good for me as that is where myKFm-1 step is located. Another interesting option would be the artic camo scheme!

Either way I think that the first coat will just be mid grey for initial flights. If she survives those then I'll add the detail.

Control surfaces: I'll opt for 10mm each way for the ailerons with 50% expo and see how it reacts.

There's a slight delay with my build at the moment due to my work load but I hope to get back in there next week, so I'll post my progress when there's something to see.

Last year I scratch built a tricopter based on the Harrier but haven't yet attached a fuselage. I may enlarge your plan a little to fit the frame.

No problem glad to help.

Fantastic colour scheme choice! Exactly the one I was thinking for mine

I'm doing my Pusher Tornado in the similar pattern.

Your Tricopter frame looks outstanding! Fantastic idea. Does the undercarriage retract? How awesome

I look forward to seeing your progress

Incidentally, I am working (albeit very slowly) on a f-35 Vtol Parkjet if you are interested :-

Thanks for your kind comments, Craig. the Tricopter idea was to scratch an itch relating to making an otherwise nondescript AUV look interesting. I also have difficulty with orientation as UAVs move away from me, so a more defined shape helps a lot.

Harrier Frame Maiden Flight (1 min 16 sec)

Yes the U/C all retract but I have disconnected them for the moment.

I have a few long-term projects myself and tend to work on a 10 year plan......well, thats my excuse!

Looks great!

Hey I notice your CAD work. If you want the 3d CAD files for the Harrier, I'd be happy to send them to you - to help you fit the shape to your tricopter. PM me with your email address - and the CAD system you use.

Was thinking if you used Openaero VTOL on a KK2.1 control board, (gives you transitions between upward and horizontal flight) and make your rear prop, turn 90 degrees - you have almost got it!!
