Hope this is the right place for the post.

Electric copters brought me back to R/C after many many years.

While messing around with copters a good friend gave me a beat up
Sukoi from Park Zone? to relearn to fly.
What a sensitive little thing! Did manage to relearn flying before the foam
wore out

All the guts are good and thinking of building something for the electronics that my old slow self can keep up with.

Input on building the airplane in the picture?
Around 13-14 inch span?

So much has changed in materials and so forth it seem a little puzzling and hard to decide what to use. Looking around best choice would be Depron(?)
up with. I love early Flying Boats
Balsa i know how to work, dread having to water proof inside and out.

I think depron would be pretty good. the only thing that you might have a problem with is the size of the stock prop.

Enlarged a 3 view to 14 inch span and looking at that if I raise the prop shaft then
cut 1/4 inch or less off the blade tips of propeller that I would have about 1/8th inch clearance.
Would the reduced load on the motor be a problem?
Not much on electric motors, back in the day everything was glow engines.


Now I need to figure out what exactly Depron is.
As well as finding a good source in the States.
If Depron is what the elevator and rudder of the Sukoi are made from this appears to be the same a pick nick plates? Playing around it looks like foam super glue works well.

Learning is fun and have I got allot to learn about this 'new' stuff.

Depron is similar to take out box / stryofoam plate foam. Most hobby shops carry "cellfoam 88" depron sheets.

You want 2mm.

2mm white and 3mm grey depron

By the way, since 2 mm Depron is 90-100 percent the weight of 3 mm, sometimes 3 mm is a better solution.

For small models, 3mm is just so chunky. It's not so much the weight, its that 3mm needs a lot of sanding to get smaller.

Thanks for the take out box idea.
If I use a center section on the top wing to match the fuselage width it will come up to the 14 inch span
The round plates are thinner and look perfect for tail feathers.
Either one will have to be spliced for fuselage length.

looking at carbon fiber rod for struts and heavy black thread for bracing.

Bummed some take out boxes from the store deli so tonight will do some cutting
of parts and see how it looks.

The do have some carbon rods and super glue so not a totally wasted 60 mile trip. No Balsa, Ply, spruce of foam!

I usually get my depron from http://www.rcfoam.com/ , they have a large selection, but the only problem I have is the shipping cost

Stayed up late and have 90% of parts cut. Quick and easy to cut out and trim to fit.
Fuselage sides and formers are together

The flat bottoms of the foam boxes and plates is not flat
Not a problem except for the wing panels as they are curved in 2 direction.
Have an idea on how to cure the problem with an aluminum jig bent to have camber
to place panels on and a little heat to reshape the foam to the jig.
The camber should flatten and stiffen wing in the span direction.

So far having a blast so something is bound to go wrong soon.

I know that the little Curtis you are building is not the NC4 used by the USN to cross the Atlantic, but I have included some plans and etc that I found of building and detailing one. Maybe you can find some of it useful.

I also have the story of that amazing flight ... its a true story but it reads like an old fashioned boys action novel. If i can, I'll find it and post it.

I keep looking a the NC-4 and seeing lots of carbon fiber rods!
One day I hope. Read the story of the Crossing 45 years or so, wouldn't hurt to
read again if time ever allows reading.

For the next Depron Boat kind of thinking the Curtiss America.
Pretty Airplane!

Sucks when the girl hobby shops are well stocked with balsa and real hobby shops have zero balsa.
Picked up a few 1/8th sticks for receiver/servo mounts.
Next stop was the Hobby Shop where I found 2 gota have toys.
the Gee Bee R-2and the D.H. Mosquito!
The adoption fee was below unbelievable

So the current Curtiss project, not real sure what model as drawings of the F model or model 1 as the pictures have called it are wrong.

Did finally identify it as an MF model after getting started on the build!
Did change the tail to match the shape of the MF

I find no drawings of the MF but think I'm close!.
And almost finished! wing struts and bracing after some sleep!
