I just purchased an IOM that hasn't been in use in a few years.. it has a Sail Number of 150 I would like to get registered if it's not yet race legal... and I would like to know more about it's hull design.. Where should I look to accomplish these things and get off on the right foot?.

. I sail ODOMs here in San Diego..but am new to the IOM world..

Hi Jim,

The number on the sail may be misleading. It is not even a class legal number (should only be the last two digits of the hull number or personal sail number).

To get the correct info, look inside the hull for a hull number, Then contact your fearless IOM class sec. Fred Rocha who is in San Diego, and he should be able to look up the number in the records.

If you can take photos and show them along with a measure of the max beam, we may be able to help.

thanks will do.. BTW it's Hull No is 450 but I will contact Fred .. and am sure several other IOM skippers here will help me get set up too..

Ok here ya go.. What type Hull design is this? How big a factor is the hull design in an IOM's performance? At my skill level it's likely irrelevant but I am curious if this model is reasonably fast and to know about how old this boat is?

I'll try to measure the max beam width tonight..

Looks like a Widget from Dave Creed.

The rudder shape indicates the boat is a few years old as the current design of rudder has squared off corners.

It's a good boat and will serve you well

It could also be a Gadget. Note the round cutout behind the rudder post and the RMG winch mount.

I hope to race with you soon. I am planning to attend the San Diego IOM regatta which I think is on Sunday Nov 18th.

Great.. I hope I am ready .. and having some trouble getting the RMG 280D Smart Winch in it programmed and may need to make or buy some accessories frm Australia to program it so I hope I will be ready.. I will try to find out if the 18th is firm too..

Jim,

As I understand it, there are two different cables for programming the 280d. See pulser and inline switch on the following link. I suspect that the pulser is for 2.4gig radios that take a longer time to acquire (eg Spektrum) while the Futaba faster acquire needs only the inline switch.

You may need one or both of them depending on your radio.

Call Bob G. with your serial number and radio type and he should be able to tell you which cable

I have both cables and can bring them to SD on the 18th

I use Spectrum 2.4 with the 280D and the 280E and have no problems, actually three different boats, and I don't use a Pulsar, it is nice but not necessary. The E series is certainly a lot easier to program though. I don't use a Y connector either.

Jim--Just follow the instructions that are on-line and you should be all set, or better yet, have John do it for you.

Just find a RMG sailor close by and he will help you programming has different variations depending on winch model and radio being used,first time user will be confused once seen it will be easy for the future.Declare what radio you are using and what model winch?
