5 pound 3D plane on 4cell?? I'm always careful about recommending a setup that hasn't been done yet.. It's fine if someone has the gear and wants to try it, but allot of new guys take ower advice, and order expensive gear... IMHO..unless you've done it? I wouldnt recommend it.. |

I bought the 60 as a backup for my 55" Edge, the weight is about the same so I figure the 4s with my current setup should work good. I may not be able to wait and just might put all the gear in the 60 and make the 55 my backup, if I do I'll post my results. But you never know between now and then if I come up with some extra money maybe I'll set it up with the recommended equipment and not worry about it.

I run my 57" Extra on 4S and it's a great setup. I have a GR-60, ZTW 85 amp ESC, and 4S 4000 mah 40C batteries (about 35-40 bucks a piece). At about 80 amps I'm getting 1200 watts on a 15x6 prop. Everything comes down cool because the components were selected and designed around 4S. It works quite well if the all of the components match properly, but if you are running a 500 KV motor like the Torque (and a lower amperage ESC) with a huge prop it's probably a bad idea and you should stick with 5S or 6S.

Tim.. the Edge flew heavy on the reaper 60.. We had to put 2 servos in the tail to help it ballance... I think I would have liked it better with a lighter setup.. I flew someones at seff.?? Maybe Mlt.. he had the 45.. It flew better than mine.. lower power but perfect.. HECK I had a reaper 45 on a SIG cadet on 4S It was AWEsome.. not enough power to hover.. BUT not far from it.. IT would slowly back down!!!!

Tim - A lot of people (incl. me) fly the 3DHS 57" Extra on a 4s setup. You need a 750-800kV motor capable of 70-80A, e.g. a Motrofly 3625-800. I fly mine with 14x6 for about 1000 wt total, most people go for 15x6, about 1200 wt. The nice part about it is, you can double these 4s batteries for an 8s setup on a 65-72 plane for about 2kwt total. I'm going to go 5s (or 6s.. not sure) with the EF Edge, though.

Curious as to some opinions here since we are talking setups on 4s. I had in the box a new Hyperion ZS 3025 10-Turn motor that I just put on a 57" 3DH Extra. I should have weighed it while I had it out but the specs say 6.95 oz's, add another ounce or so for prop adaptor and backplate, so roughly 8 ounces. Spun it up using a 15x7 Vox wooden prop with Rhino 3700 25c 4s battery and a Reaper 85 amp ESC and came out at 1150 watts at just around 85 amps. Thats after it settles down from initial peak. Could be an alternative for a real lightweight setup. I read that this ship flies best at around 1200 watts but maybe the weight being less would even that out. AUW is 4.5 Ilbs. My 2 concerns are:
1. The motor did get a little warm, 115 degrees after a couple minutes of running it at various throttle settings. Inflight airflow, maybe wind baffles may help this. 2. Would it be able to balance the big 60" Edge without adding noseweight. No sense in adding deadweight. Haven't really made a decision yet on the powerplant but I'm not going to buy a new set of 5-6 cell batts when I have all these 4 cells. Just thinking out loud and curious as to any thoughts. Steve |
