How much power does an RC gyro need to fly level
I am trouble shooting my motor that is getting very hot on my gyro so I connected the watt meter to the gyro and took it for a flight!
Weight 16.2 ounces up to 19.4 with Watt meter on board.
38 inch rotor hot wire foam blades with CF leading edge. Disc loading 2.46
Peak watts 133.6/ 11.84 amps peak
Data for flying a level circuit with about 1/2 throttle. Including climb out and a few climbing turns. Wind about 10 mph
Flight time 4.5 mins
Average amp draw 6.7
Average watts 76
Volts min 10.78
After this flight the motor was too hot to grab. It even had a hot smell.

We had this same problem with hot motors until we realized the motor is working harder than it would on a fixed wing model due to drag from the rotor system. We think of it as pulling a trailer with a car. The engine must work harder.
We solved the problem by using motors in a higher wattage class.
This is the motor I use on my Scout from Flying Balsa:
It is in the 600 Watt class, it is inexpensive, has more than enough power, and doesn't get hot.
