Nice work Bart. At first I wondered why you'd bother doing the cad for a stick fuse... but I think you are right, the precise plans alone would be worth the effort. It was also probably a prerequisite step for the formers to come.
Keep it up! It's only time you're spending now. ![]() Luke |

Youre right there Luke, next step is the top and bottom formers etc.
The CAD plan is the main reason why i did this but also it was a great exercise for my as i still have a lot to learn on working with Rhino. By looking at the plan now i think i have made a minor mistake : When you build the side of the framework over the side view plan it is let say 150cm or 60 inch lengt from nose to tail ( example ). Then when you ad the cross formers to join the side's the side's will bend and so become shorter than the 60 inch in the side view. made a simple paint drawing to explain. Have to find a way to make this right . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ![]() Greets , Bart |

I don't know much about Rhino but back in the dim and distant when I was a CAD draughtsman, it was possible to start with a plan view of the basic box and then 'interrogate' the program to discover the arc length of one side. This dimension could then be used to lay out the length of one fuselage 'ladder' (side) flat. Keep up the good work, the Empire boats were very elegant aircraft!

In practice, by which I mean during the building phase, I think you will find the bend to be so minor as to make the change in length negligible due to any curvature.
But if you are going to all the trouble to draw it in CAD, of course it is worth getting it precisely correct. I'm not sure how you would do this in Rhino but I'm guessing there should be some kind of "ruler" tool, as Pete says. Luke |

@Joe : Thanks for the heads up but as you can see from the sections in the drawing by Len Whalley the side's were flat and sloped inwards to te front top. The Hull side's of the S.45 Solent had much more roundings then the S.23.
Solent Empire sections @ Luke , Think im gonne read through the list of commands and see what are my options. Question : Could annyone post a picture of the NASA leading edge cuff ? want to see it in detail. Greets, Bart |

Hi Guys,
I hope this is the answer to the question. ![]() This is my process to Un-roll in Rhino. 1. Build your model. 2. Create a silhouette with the command of the same name. 3. Use the Silhouette to create surfaces. 4. Use the Un-Roll develop-able surface tool. Hope this helps ![]() Cheers! Gary |
