Help!
Need someone to machine cores for me

Hi Guys,

I am having some molds made, but I need someone who can do a production run on tail cores. If anyone is interested please PM me, maybe 20-50 sets.

Thanks

Ali

Ali,

Good luck finding someone that will do this work for a reasonable price. I suspect 50 tail cores will run over $2 grand if you find someone generous with their time. If you notice there is a reason most molded tail makers have a CNC machine. Might want to evaluate that route, just a thought.

Good luck,
Sam

I am wanting to make tail molds as well, but don't have a CNC to machine cores. Since I'll probably just be making parts for myself, I figured I'd sand Rohacell to shape. Tom Siler said somewhere that he'd done it, and it didn't take terribly long. It's pretty labor intensive for production work, though.

Sanding rohacell to shape can work. I have yet to make an acceptably lightweight tail using that method; however I have only tried 3 times. It is very labor intensive. IIRC, Tom made a bunch before getting surfaces consistently sub 7g, and he was never super happy with the finish quality.

Sam, can't swing a proper router at the moment. I'm hoping there is someone out there I can work something out with.

Sanding to size / shape is not so bad. Rohacell dust is incredibly itchy... maybe worse than sanding fiberglass.

I consistently get tails a half gram lighter by using CNC but made some great stuff by hand too. YMMV.

BTW, Brian does fantastic work

That's for certain. Scott won a set of Brian's tails at The Bruce and they look fantastic!

Hi Ali:

Do you know Gytis? Last time I went to his garage, he had a little CNC cutting foam tails.

If I was just making one or two I would sand away, but 20 or more?? No way Jose. LOL

The sad part is I probably hand sanded about 30 or 40 of these with a CNC sitting in my garage. I guess I wasn't using my grape very well.
