Paint scheme for period sailing ship

I am scratch building a British cutter dated around 1790 and up to the stage of painting. Its taken quite some time to get to this point and would not like to make a mistake at this time.Could somebody give me some advice on colours and types of paints to use for that period of ship?

I think dark blue or black above the water line with white trim and red below the waterline was popular at that time, also white with contrasting trim above waterline. Sure you will get other options/ideas.
