NCAR and Zion are both primarily slermal sites so any given day can range from epic to a long hike.
The difference is a lot more flyable wind directions at Zion and a bigger hill. Zion also has a
couple DS ridges. Mines is a very different school than CU so probably should
base your decision on that.

Ordered some bits tonight to get the Strega flying for Soar Utah. I'm going to attempt a wing joiner mold tomorrow night. I think I have enough left over cast AL plate to make it.

It should be great flying on the slope at Soar Ut. One of my most favorite.
Had our last club meeting last night should be fun for all who will attend.

RCRCM Strega slowly going back together:
- Wing skins repaired and good to go.
- Left Flap root repaired and working.
- Right Aileron control horn replaced.
- V-tail push rods repaired.
- New servo tray created and installed.
- Fuse nose pieced back together with new layers inside and out.
- Joiner hole in fuse repaired. Fun job

Now all that's left before I leave for Soar Utah on Thursday is the wing joiner and hooking everything up to a new rx. Closer and closer to a functional F3F racer again! Priceless.

Quick and dirty wing joiner mold for the Strega.

It's got a few mistakes in the cam that shows in the final part but it's usable.

I was cutting the cast AL at 150ipm at 15krpm with a 2f carbide 0.25 end mill. Machine handled it pretty well. Some chatter but I was pushing pretty hard on a home made machine.

I was using WD40 for cutting fluid. It was smoking pretty good when I was cutting at 150 ipm.

Finish was with a 0.25 ball mill and then 1/8" ball mill.

Took about 3 hrs of cutting.

Now to do the other half. The OEM broken Strega joiner does snugly fit into the mold.

Have enough tow to make a solid joiner, or going to lay it up over a twin balsa core?

I took the week off to recover from our big FPV meet this last weekend, and to work
on planes for Soar Utah.
Found some ballast for my Victor, but probably not enough for F3F.
Stumbled on my old Extropus with delammed flight surfaces (hangar rash) and
repaired that, but probably too heavy for PoTM. Fun for Jones though.
Cheater D60 is good to go, as always. Maybe I'll hike up the point and DS it with Nick.
Got out a half repaired Thorn which I really need to get glued back together today,
or it won't make it. It also needs to be repainted.
Started on a brand new Brian McLean Apex I've had in the closet for a couple years.
Got all the servos glued in last night and all it needs now is to cut the covers to shape,
lead balancing, a new battery and receiver and programing. I can't find its carbon
joiner though. I've got a 12 inch long, 11mm diameter steel joiner that fits perfectly
(but didn't come with the plane), so the carbon joiner is probably with some other plane,
but don't know where. Most likely with one of my Extremes, but most of them seem to use
a shorter joiner.
Need to find a couple micro servos (HS-35 or equiv) to fix my Libelle.

BTW, here's a little fun from Sunday morning at our FPV meet this last weekend.

Joiner is curing.

I used fiberglass and carbon fiber sock over 25psi blue foam strips x3 and 3 layers of unicarbon top and bottom. I used some sock material in between the strips to add more thickness to the carbon webs. I 3m77 glued the empty sock to the foam strips and then socked over them to make it easier to handle.

Wing joiner came out amazing. It was slightly tight but a bit of sanding and it fits beautifully. There's a couple very minor bubbles on the surface but overall looks better than the original joiner that was damaged. Weight is within 1 gram of the original.

Now to head to Utah and test it out!

All of you at Soar Utah or elsewhere are missing a whole bunch of South to South East wind at Zion and bad wind at the other sites too. I hope you all forget to turn your transmitters off at the end of day and run your batteries down (insert your favorite version of the grumpy cat picture here).

In all actuality, I hope you all are having a great time. Your not missing ANYTHING here except bad wind and rain storms every afternoon. That is all.
