Bell X-1

Hi all,
My friend and i are going to build a remote controlled Bell X-1 1-20th scale with an 11inch wingspan and was wandering if a C6-5 rocket engine will supply enough power to move the Bell a good distance.
Thanks Zachb657

A C6 would be plenty. Built light an A3 would probably be adequate.

Keep in mind this will be R\C with a receiver, 3 mini servos, and a small battery pack plus it will be made out of balsa.

It depends on weight as well, you can choose lighter materials than wood and keep weight light and make it bigger which will help wing loading and visibility, and reduce the CG shift %.

You could use foam but the rocket would probably melt it

Nope, I do all the time, you just need a motor mount tube for insulation
I've never had a motor melt foam around a motor tube from d through g motors in my gliders.

I like your idea we just might use your plans as a reference for our Bell X-1. I think we will scale it down a little so it has a smaller wingspan of about 11 inches to launch it off of a plane. We dont know if we want to use a C engine or a D.

Imho the cg shift with a d motor in that small of a model will be too large to trim out after burn unless you eject nose weight ir use a composite d.

BELL-X1 test fire (0 min 25 sec)

I use a "D" rocket and it goes up about 300-350 ft. Wild, trying to control it as you can see. When I get around to it , will launch from a transport, let it glide down and then fire. Did a "shuttle" 2 years ago. Estimate it will do over 400 ft.

Accounted for CG shift with burning D rocket.
