sailplane radio's?

hey guys.
quick question...

currently i have a spektrum dx8. i use it for all the planes i have but i tend to fly gliders more than anything else.

now i chose the dx8 for the telemetry options and so fully kitted out my 4.2 meter ask21 to the point of even making a removable pitot tube arrangement as per full size gliders. i love the system and have never had a problem with the gear.

however.....

im fed up with how long they have been dragging their ass on getting a vario or sailplane programming out.

what other radio systems are there out there on similar par or better, with telemetry options including varios?

cheers guys.

Check out the Jeti DC-16 or DS-16.

I fly gliders only and love mine. Full telemetry and a whole lot more!

Yup,love mine. Nice hand feel for me and I like the programming logic. However, Hitec is also dragging on vario module so you might want to look elsewhere. I ordered one and the order was canceled by vendor due to module unavailabilty.

Very happy with my A9 as a sailplane radio, to the extent I've just bought a second set as a back-up...

I love my Futaba T14SG. Would be a good deal as well, very good quality and programming capability for relatively little money.
The telemetry on the other hand is by now not at its peak yet, for instance they're about to come up with an update that should enable the most of the telemetry function (as far as I heard).

I suppose that anybody will suggest you the radio he or her is using by himself. But the most critical thing you should keep in mind while choosing a new radio is how it suits your hands, which one is the most comfortable while holding it for a long time.
I could have chosen a JR, or a Graupner HoTT radio, but by far the T14SG suited my grip the best. On a certain level the radios are somehow equal with programming capability.

I love my JR / Graupner MX-22. I bought mine used (read cheap) on the bay in Germany without a module. Then I got myself a Robbe / Futaba 2,4g module and am using the Futaba receivers. Works like a charm.

The FrSky et.al. generic modules / receivers work with this set-up as well.
All in all, I have an excellent transmitter, a 12ch and two 7ch Futaba receivers, all for under USD400. I didn't want to trust a generic receiver for my big birds, but doing so, would easily save you another $100 .

The MX-22 can be picked up in GB / AUS / NZ with english software as well.
I love the mixing abilities, way better than the JR stuff over here in N.A.

If you are considering the A9 you may want to wait another month for the X-9. Mostly the same radio with all the improvements everyone asked for.

If you like the DX8 but are annoyed with the lack of some features you might want to look at the DX18 which has sailplane mixing.

I can't speak to a vario as I don't use one, but the radios that are most often recommended for sailplane pilots would be:

Hitec Aurora 9
Futaba 8FG, 10C and the new 14SG which adds FAASTest telemetry
Airtronics SD10G
JR 9503, X11

There, of course are others, and many with much higher prices, but these are the ones that I see mentioned most often.

JR 9503 is probably your best bet if you already have a bunch of DSM receivers. I haven't really run into any issues programming whatever I want, nicely built radio at a reasonable cost.

VSpeak speech module for Spektrum (EN) (0 min 20 sec)

Just tryed it yesterday with the dx8 on my 3,5 meter glider,
Works great..

It use the altimeter, as variometer.

There is a tread in this forum about the vspeak.

9503 is a good choice and a second hand one can be had cheap.

If you change systems Airtronics is very popular among sailplane pilots and is a good value for the money.
