Inherited a GWS Slowstick - need help

I recently had a neighbor move away and as he left he handed me his GWS Slowstick and some parts.

Included in the box of supplies is an Electrify SS-25 Brushless ESC, E-Flite Park 370 Outrunner 1360KV motor and a ThunderPower LiPo 1320mah/7.4V 2 cell battery.

I already have a Futaba 6EXAP - 6 channel Tx, PCM1024 - R146iP Rx and S3114 servos.

I have everything installed, but cannot get the motor to function correctly. The servos are working fine but when I engage the throttle the motor will come on but it is very choppy and only one speed, very slow. Increasing throttle has not effect. Throttling back to off will turn it off though. At 3/4 throttle it will continue with the choppy behavior for about 5-8 seconds and then stop.

The battery is charged to 8.4V but appeared to stop at approx 780mah. The charged stopped after 67 minutes.

Any ideas? I have read all of the documentation I can find for each of the pieces in the puzzle but no success on a solution.

Thank You for any help.

It sounds like you have a bad connection between the ESC and motor in at least one of the 3 wires. Double check everything and try again.

Checked all connections again and after closer inspection of motor it appears there are tow or three discolored coils. Also, tried to operate again, same result but a little smoke escaped the motor. I am thinking I might need to try a new motor.
