Livingroom micro Flying Wing

Hi
Just finished building a pure tail-less swept back flying wing of my own design with dual 4mm motor differential steering. Constructed of 0.8mm carbon rods and 0.5mm rods for the wingtip section, covered with Mylar. The reflex is achieved by twisting and pulling on the wing tips with fine monofilament. Because the tips are made from smaller diameter rods it will flex more than the main spar giving it the necessary reflex in the aft section. There is no rudder.
Initial flights are encouraging, it is much much faster than my original LRF but it also can turn very tight as well. The yaw stability is surprisingly good. It's the pitch moment I need to tweak, I think it needs more reflex.
Haven't weigh it yet but guessing around 5gm... I have not clip the tail boom off yet because later on I might go with a single motor with rudder to make it a floater, but then it won't be a pure flyingwing anymore if I do that...we'll see
Here is a video:

Neat model Black -- I would be interested in knowing where that model balances.

Thanks HerkS, the CG is where those two X's are near the receiver. This was determined after glide tests of the bare airframe. The amount of reflex was guesstimated til it "looked good"

Looks quite stable and slow enough to be a lrf. Great job. Is it IR or 2.4?

Holy Moly Black ! I have lumps of glue that weight more than 5gm! Love the control system. Kinda like retro rockets.

With your high ceilings, I wonder if you could thermal it over a hot patch of ceramic tile ?!......Oh, never mind. I guess you'd need a tail for that.

Clever approach to wing twist. Maybe you could put the wing twist on a servo and have control without power.

I can't imagine how you can create reflex in the airfoil. With wing sweep and wing twist you can get pitch stability with any airfoil.

Considering it's simplicity, it's a fascinating project.

Hi Knol53, 5gm is not impressive at all in the micro LRF world, there are guys that can get it below 3gm!
What kind of seed is that? Does it glide or autorotate like maple seeds? Maybe you can hollow out the center section and put rx and motor in it R/C seed!

I couldn't find the right video, but these seeds are grown in an open bowl, of sorts and at the right time the wind blows them out of the bowl and they are off ! The glide of the seed is part of the trees survival strategy inasmuch as the new seedlings will be far enough away from the mothership to not represent competition for sunlight and other resources.

Cool indeed!

If i am remembering correctly, the plant grows on an island that doesn't get much wind, so spinning seeds wouldn't work to get distance from the tree.

Not only do they glide but it appears that when trimmed well that they glide darn well!

Hey Black', I was waiting for you to thread the needle through the opening and come back in via the passageway..... Com'on, I KNOW it's been in the back of your mind....

How long will you be able to keep your flying site clear of furniture?

I have thread that needle several times! First time was accidental with the slow flyer and got lucky, several attempts after that didn't work out
The wife wants to put furnitures in the living room, typical right? But for now I convinced her to keep is as the kids play room, who uses the living room aka airspace anyway?

When I added a 1000 s.f. 2nd floor addition to my house, I first balloon framed the outside walls and put the roof on with no interior walls. What a great indoor flying space it was! Very tempted to leave it that way............

Now I have 3 bedrooms and 2 baths up there and fly in Big Sur.
