Idea
Single-Engine Gas Multirotor Project (Senior Design)

I just signed up for my senior design class at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and trying to come up with some ideas (this being one since it's not exactly common). I figured the ability to have the VTOL capabilities while having 1+ hour of endurance is a valuable asset without having to deal with the complexities of a single-rotor helicopter.

I have some ideas in mind to make this work (similar to the Curtis Youngblood Stingray), but would like other feedback before our team commits to the concept.

i dont see there being a huge market in the hobby sector though i have thought this would be an awesome idea to finally get a super long range multirotor platform

Yea I should have mentioned that above, that this will most likely be used for UAV type of applications, not the typical RC modeler...

It's the same way with gasoline helis, there's just a handful of guys that like them.
I just figured why not put a gas engine on CY Stingray-type of mechanics for ultra long endurance

I would think the amount of endurance you could get would be worthwhile for the commercial market. But, you're asking the wrong people here.

Yea I saw that yesterday. However, his is nitro. Not sure what his plans are for going gasoline (wouldn't be hard to convert for him). Our team plans on having over an hour of endurance, with an on-board generator that charges the back up avionics pack.

LOL that is ridiculously awesome Chris!

Have you all determined the size gas engine will be used, and how big this will be?

We are going to try to size it around the Zenoah 260. And will probably swing Trex 250 size blades.

Yup I saw that video within an hour of it being posted. Because of it, our team has decided to do a hexacopter instead of a quadcopter. I'll be keeping this thread updated as soon as we start building

The frame is about a meter long without blades installed.
