in 1978, liberal-socialist Jim Jones along with his doctor Larry Schact concocted a cyanide/flavor-aid mixed to give to the members of the People's temple agricultural project. While it might be looked upon as a mass suicide, the children that died were most certainly murdered.

Maniacs will kill, no matter what tools they use. In fact, in this case they considered using guns to shoot people, but even with that option, chose poison instead, rendering access to guns as a moot point.

Not sure but I doubt the congregation was not allowed be armed, just the leaders. Humm, sounds like what Mr Obama wants.

True, but that is 4 our of 918, and a separate event from the poison drinking, although directly connected. The leader and another lady both drank poison, but commited suicide w a gun as well. The rest of the 912 were poisoned, adults willfully, many many children forced.

The event basically broke the person whom I replaced at a pharmaceutical company, as he had been responsible for booking the order for the cyanide and Largactil used. For him, the politics of the reverand Jones were incidental.

Oh man, that's terrible I read it was bought under the guise of cleaning Gold, and Jones had a jewlers license. It also said they were receiving a half pound shipment for a few months prior.

It was I believe sent to a Trinidadian chemical wholesaler who probably didn't bother to ask what it was to be used for.

How do you equate the "massacre" of hundreds of people choosing to kill themselves and their children, with one person killing hundreds of people directly with a weapon for instance?

Where did one person massacre hundred with a gun? Poisoning children is just as bad as shooting them. More children were killed that horrible day than any school shooting we've had. The point is that evil abounds, and innocents will be killed, guns or no guns. In this situation, they nixed the idea for using guns in favor of poison.

Poison is a much more efficient means of killing than any firearm.

It's particularly telling that the OP didn't mention ultra-religious in the description of Jones. After all, he did think he was the messiah.

You are the one suggesting that poisoning oneself along with their children is equal to say someone with a gun killing them instead, totally bogus!

The logical disconnect is palpable among gunsters these days. I blame it on desperation. The mere fact that these people had followed Jones to another country, who had been telling them they were going to wind up dead soon anyways, completely differentiates their fate with that of say, total innocents mowed down by a nut while going about the normal daily routine.
