new boat ? not really.........

Hello from Chicago
we had a S/B Sunday today, not a big turnout which is a shame as we had a
beautiful day here.
I wanted to post 2 pics I snapped lake side, our club member Mike Martin
has had this S/B about FORE EVER , but somehow life keeps getting in the
way of his build. The deck is on, radio board built-so actual progress-he has
been finishing the deck with west sys. epoxy, and brought it by for us to
see it. I am told the hull will eventually be British Racing Green color.
Just wanted to show off a friends build- Mike don't build fast, but he builds
good. I think his sail number is 1399 .
oh,
and when asked, he said it WILL have a class spec. keel-we all thought his
version of a "winged keel" was a bit over the top........

The Sacramento MYC had 5 SB's on the line today, in hot (98F and rising) temps and patchy winds. Sorry, no pictures

If you had a good start and found the patches of wind, you did OK. If you sailed into a hole, you were left behind.....and as the day wore on and the temperature rose, the holes became larger and more frequent. Still, a day sailing is better than a day doing almost anything else.

After doing soooooo badly at the Nat's in San Diego, I did well today, taking first overall in five heats with one throwout. I hesitate to list the other boats as the Robinsons' trade and loan out boats (they loaned out one today to another club member) and I can't keep track of who is sailing which boat One of their boats was second, Gene N. third, Jeff S. fourth and another Robinson boat was 5th.

It is nice to have a class builder in the club, even if it occasionally causes some confusion.

The Elk Grove MYC races the SB's next on Sept 13 and the Sac club again the following weekend, Sept 20.

Gene N. is the runaway season leader right now and unless he collapses in the next three events (not likely), he will be impossible to catch. More as it develops.

current thinking

Hello all, I am thinking (again) about getting my Protheroe S/B #49 going. I met Tom in Santa Barbara when I bought the kit from him in 1966 - he had some incredible models with spinnaker launchers, etc. Anyhooo, I saw the discussions from 2011 about winches and am wondering if there is anything new under the sun for controls? (the drone servo died in 1972). Also need sails. Thanks in advance, Leif (Santa Cruz, CA)

Leif:

Just about all the new boats are using a Robozone gearbox from Servo city.com - either the 3.8:1 or the 5:1 ratio. They have several different mounting styles and driver servos of various strengths. Look back in this thread and you can see photos of installations.

Lots of people make sails for the SB; Rod Carr Sails, Ken Bauser of KB Sails (he has Chuck Black's patterns), Jess Atkenson of BBJ Sails, Sirius Sails, Jake Leo of Vector Sails and probably others. Whose are the "fastest" makes for endless hours of discussion. Email and/or web addresses for these guys can be found on the AMYA site under suppliers. www.theamya.org

certification

Hello again, I just finished reading this entire forum - terrific info. I saw mention of Tom P.'s #100 being the earliest "legal" hull? Mine is #49 - at least the sail he gave me with the kit is #49. I do not remember seeing and cannot find a number inside the hull. Will this antique be allowed to race? (Fixed keel, skeg) Thanks, Leif

Contact class secretary, Mark Baldacchino. The address is on the AMYA website under the "Boats" tab - under Santa Barbara.

He may be able to trace the ownership history of the boat if it was ever registered and tell you if the boat is technically legal.

The early SB's had a skeg that was later allowed to be removed and the boat fitted with a larger rudder. The current rules- also on the SB page - restrict only the depth and total area of the rudder and skeg, if used.

I doubt that anyone is going to question the legality of a boat that Tom built.

AMYA has a general bylaw that grandfathers all older boats that were class legal under any older version of the class rules.

right ! because so many grandfathers sail S/Bs...
.
we had a Soling day today, but Mike brought his S/B along-he has the hull
painted and says he can finish it all for the Region 4 CR on Sept. 4 & 5.
.
I had to do a gear box on mine, I bought this for my EC-12, but then needed
to do the install on the S/B so I can sail the R4. still fine tuning a bit.

Certification & history

Thanks for the input - I'll check it out. The history of #49 is pretty easy - I built it, never modified it, & never registered it. And I am a grandfather so it must be ok?

That would pass in the class I'm CS of. You get all the bonus points for building, keeping and being a grandfather. The boat looks great. Now go out there and kick everyone's butt with it.
