Goldberg Floats

This kit comes with an optional "ventral fin", most likely designed for the
Goldberg Cub. Can anyone tell me what this is used for? I am putting the
floats on a Falcon 3 with an Enya 45.

Re: Goldberg Floats

The ventral fin is installed to compensate for the additional area that you
add when putting on floats. In other words the cross sectional area of the
aircraft ahead of the centre of rotation is increased by the floats so you
compensate by adding some at the back by installing the fin. An airplane is
just a fancy weather vane that is kept pointing the right way by the area
aft of the centre of rotation. Without the fin, some 'planes become very
unstable and want to turn around and fly tail first. Some planes fly just
fine without it, but if this is your first time on floats, install it for
sure. All the Falcons I have seen have the fin installed. Can't go wrong
by putting it on.
