Load and cooling

I am not familiar with that particular ESC, and advice will depend on your setup.
However, the basic fixes for overheating of ESC/batteries, and much battery puffing, are less load (smaller prop or fewer cells) and better ventilation.
You don't say whether your 40 seconds run is static on the ground (not a good idea for extended test runs) or in flight.
Cheers,

Then again, looking at your username, you may be talking about a surface vehicle, in which case ignore references to flight and props, insert running and gearing. The basic principles remain.
