Lost Model Locator Beacon <$5 Plug and Play
I've tested this locator beacon out:
The downside is that the range is severely reduced when the beacon is tipped on its side instead of upright or with small hills in the way, but for less than $5 USD, there might be some use for the beacon.
I got 960 feet ( about 290 meters) range without a problem with it placed upright on the ground. You could probably get to 1,000 feet range or so, depending on environment and the WiFi antenna on your Android phone.
With a cheap USB OTG Host Power Splitter like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OTG-Host-Pow...8AAOSwYGFUwQMH and USB power pack like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-USB...zKkZc5zMmoVOeQ, you might be able to use an external WiFi antenna like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vogue-Long-R...wAAOxyOlhSu93j to locate the beacon from 3km away or so. I know that the OTG splitter + USB power bank + USB WiFi antenna + Android phone setup does not work with Motorola phones because of driver issues, and the app may not be compatible either, but you could try it if you want. The purpose of the USB power bank is to supply power to the USB Antenna, because the phone cannot supply that much current.
Anyway, it might be worth trying, if not for lost models, then for radio transmitter hunting!
Have a nice day,
