Geoff - I'm pins only.
I'd like to try a magnetic thingy at some stage. Pat |

I do much of my building with 1-2-3 blocks. They are machined steel blocks which are exactly 1" x 2" x 3". As you would expect they are quite heavy so they do a good job of holding stuff down. They also have perfect right angles and can be used to hold things in vertical alignment. Butt two of them together to make a perfect jig for gluing things together at perfect right angles. I can hardly build without them any more. Beyond that I usually build on glass and tack glue right to the surface.

I've just started using a magnetic building board. The airfield models link in CaptAhab's post is the best source of info I've found.

I'm still "stuck" with pins to the past. I do use CYA glue and accelerator, brushless motors and lipos and iron-on coverings including Doculam. I use mostly TLAR and "imitation" technology and only read about magnetic building boards, incidence meters, wing jigs, CAD programs and hobby software, etc. Maybe that's why some of my creations have banana-fuselages and fly funny.

I'm definitly a #1! I used to use a board and pins, but I started using magnets and I'll never go back. I built a set of jigs like the previously mentioned ones at airfieldmodels.com and are the best building tools in my shop bar none. Magnetic jigs are better than anything I've seen for building a straight fuselage and for aligning wings and tail surfaces.
The only drawback I can see is the price, but I got all my latch magnets from www.allelectronics.com and all my block magnets from a local vendor. When it was all said and done I doubt if I spent more than $100 on the whole thing. I'm currently using them to build this: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=979220 ~Jake |

Magnets all the way. I have two boards a short one for Fuse building and a long one for wings. We a great metal supply store here in Sacramento and I can buy sheet steel and have it sheared to size. I screw it to 1-12 pine. Airfield models has the addie for the magnets.....
