It does it even without the prop. You would think that being new it wouldn't be the bearings. Maybe they need oil

even a new motor can be fubared .. if it is new has not been nosed in on the motor then most likely a factory defect

There is also the risk of a 'foreign body' in the motor causing the noise. I remember some people complaining about machining swarf being found in some motors.

Another risk is a loose or misplaced magnet.

Hey now,
The best oil for most motor bearings in our BL motors is... None.
Genenerally they are sealed bearings and the few that aren't generally have instruction on what oil to use.
If its a brand new motor and its making a *grinding* sound and not a squeak or squeel then its:
1) very bad bearings. Like beyond gone. Remedy: return it NOW!
2) machining schrapnel. If you know how and want to; open it up and clean every last bit out. Check the windings ajd all around the magnets. Youll really have to work to get ferrite metal out. Or better, return it NOW!
3) mismounted or out of true bell. Attempt a reset and *maybe* try and true the bell. Again much better to RETURN IT NOW!!!
Does any of this help?
Basically if its new and not right (grinding noises are not right). Its always best
to return it. Always.
