The 150 sq. in rule gives 29" wingspan on the Vampire, but I forgot to check the distance between the booms. Doing that now. Okay, I have clearance for a 6" propeller (6.6395").

I was thinking a 5mm carbon tube inside a 3 layer lamination with the vertical stab as part of the center lamination.

Sounds a bit heavy to me, but I think i'm doing the error of having my mind set on indoor plane construction, where you need a rather tight turning ability - I'd most likely go for 150-180g AUW (Or less if possible) at 29".............maybe I should go over the thread again.......

Your idea would be strong though.....Probably suitable for a park model.

Ok, I'm confused. Is this Vampire designed to fly "elevons" only? Like a wing-type airframe?
Do you then deliberately "under-size" the horisontal stab & "over-size" the ailerons?

I saw you flew the Hunter like that Ken... boggles my mind!

I am interested in flying the Vamp on elevons only. It should be quite stable as the fixed elevator will dampen the response. In the case of elevator size I increased the chord by 10% as well as the vertical stabilizer area.

I want to try this out this way first since servo space is tight and I am constrained to use dual aileron servos on this design. However a functional elevator is not out of the equation. I will test it both ways. CG may be a challenge on this one with a pusher motor and a relatively short nose.

I was not real happy with the looks of the PLF style fuselage on the Vampire, so I figured a VLF on would be much sharper.

Build Log 06-OCT-2012: Cut the prototype kit this evening. Seems quite easy to assemble. Will post plans and build guide here.

Build Log 09-OCT-2012: Started assembling the kit today. Got the canopy, fuselage center and left hand outer laminations glued up.

Build Log 10-OCT-2012: Finished the fuselage laminations, built up the wing, and glued up the boom sub-assemblies. Dry fitted sub-assemblies. Presanded the subs, and glued up the entire airframe. Finish sanded, added firewall, servos, motor, esc, and rx. Finished battery retention magnet installation.

With all those VLF layers this Vamp (with some detail sanding) will be much too nice for Combat!
a Few triangular pieces aound the intakes & you got a "stand-off scale" model....

If the elevons work out well it will also suit the BAC Lightning. It is basically an "interrupted" delta... I recall in one of my early posts 'bout the Lightning some-one posted that very set-up. Must go back & look.

Sure will help simplicity & weight saving (& $$$)

From the comments in the linked thread and gut feeling, i'm getting a hunch, that the elevon solution will get to be more interesting to operate, the further the tail gets away from the wing rear edge.......at some point it would actually make sense to reverse the elevator input, in reality working it as flaps......but where that point is.....good question...? And in between that point and the point where there's stable normal elevon control, the handling is very likely to be sluggish.......but I guess the only reasonable way to find out is to build a crude test model and try it out....

One of the discoveries made flying the Hunter in both modes is that elevon setups require a further forward CG than a conventional setup. So this could be helpful to know with long nosed jets.

If you were to build this, would you put ailerons in-board or out-board of that famous wing dihideral? (or both?)

Full flying H-Stab? Or conventional fixed H-Stab + elevator split?

Makes sense; If the CG is placed more or less as if there was no stab surface(but still a vertical tail to balance the nose weight), It should fly like a wing only model, the tail would just dampen the elevator reactions a bit.
