It was explained to me that speed was the only difference between the gen 2 and 3?

ok so taking the speed is different are these units worth using? i have never used air retracts and they do seem to be a bit severe in operation, i am after a scale (ish) look and operation, reliability and longevity.
I have heard Robarts or Sierra are the way to go but they are quite expensive too.

They don't have to slam up and down. Friend has a giant ESM spitfire with Sierra grear and they are very scale (slow) and sequential.
Like LDM I have the 120sz ESM Corsair in the works.I have the sierra retracts not yet installed.

I have a pair of the version 3.5 for the BF109E. So far they've been holding up well. I've had a few rough landings too and still going working...

If you get a pair, make sure you get the V3.5. I don't think they actually list a V3.5 but the difference (as far as I know) between V3 and V3.5 is the pin in the retract which pushes/pulls the trunion is made of steel instead of brass. The brass pin tends to bend or break completely.

Thanks guys for the info.
I will more than likely go the Gen 3.5 route as they are readily available here in Aus where as the Sierra's have to come from the states.
I have been using the E-flite retracts on a P40b as thus far they are fine, although i have had a couple of motor failures which have been replaced under warranty from Modelflight.

Who stocks ESM in Aus? N.Z supplier has the planes but is out of retracts. Rather not send of to the States for them if I can get them next door!

Regards....Bak

I gather the ESM retracts need a separate battery pack to operate them?
Unlike the Wing Span electrics which operate off the RX power.

Yes they do need a separate battery. I'll hold my tongue on my opinion about the Wingspans.

Gen 4 LoL
If at first you don't succeed try try again?
May as well wait for Gen 5 or go air.
I have Sierra gear in my ESM models. They work great. They can take a beating, too.

Don't waste your money, instead, go check out electron retracts. Pay the money, end enjoy every minute of flying without worrying about whether your landing gear will collapse or not.
