Kalteisen Katana 40 - Build Thread

Just picked up 2 Katana 40 kits from Quicker!! These planes build fast and are super strong!

Here is the equipment I have for the first one:
Motor - Turnigy 42-40B - http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=4912
ESC - Hobby King SS 40-50* http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6459
Servos - Corona DS-929MG http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6314
Batteries - some 3s_2100-2300 packs

I have one already finished, should get a flight report and maybe some video soon.

I did spin up the motor in the workshop, drew 40 amps on a 13x6 with a 3s 2150 Rinho 20C pack. I'm going to try a 11x5.5, 11x7 and a 12x6 to see where the best performance is. With the 13x6 it had a ton of pull, nearly came out of my hand!!

*ESC is OPTO only, so you will need a BEC to make this work.

Nice work mate. I'll pick mine up from the Post Office tomorrow and make a start too.

I ended up installing the motor I had set aside for this one into a mates Addiction... What model is the Turnigy motor you've got lined up there? I need to order a replacement ASAP.

Wow. That's a pretty serious donk - it's really going to haul. I was going to go for this one http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...Eq_AXi_2808%29 with a 3S 1800 pack, but maybe I need to up-size.

That motor will work great on the Kat 40 also! The reason for the 900 KV, is that one of the planes was going to run 4s. He was planning on using the same packs from his Rave 450. We figured we could run it with an 11x5.5, we'll have to try it out and see what the amp draw is.

Too keep it all clean I cut out areas for the receiver and the ESC. I then used a hot wire to cut a channel from the motor into the ESC area for the motor lead wires. You cold just use a drill bit, or take a piece of wire and heat it up and stick it through.

I also cut a small trench for the tail servo wires and used a drill to drill a hole from the bottom of the fuse up to the servo cut-outs. I then cut a hole in the bottom of the fuse large enough to stuff the excess servo lead into. Covered all the wires with clear packing tape.

Katana video

Here's a quickie video from yesterday. I had a small window to get out in the morning before we went to the Husker football game. Of course only one battery charged and it was not at 100% so you see it the ESC voltage cutoff hit at the end

Nothing fancy. I'll try to get out tonight after my son's football game.

Yeah, we were going to maiden one the Katanas today, but the winds would have tore it apart!

I'll have to hide the ESC wires on the two kits I have. The wires are are a little short on the motor and esc, not sure if I can get it back as far as your CC-35. I'll have to cut the hole out for the receiver also.
