HobbyKing now does Depron (sort of)

Just got one of those emails from hobbyking.

Went to their site, and found this

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html

ok, so its not depron, but it is like depron,

This one is £9.93..... FOR 20 SHEETS..............

whoo hooooo HK has pulled through, i know where i am ordering my foam from next time

so for us uk guys, we can now get a large amount, on the cheap.

they do.

3mm
500mm x 700mm - £9.93
500mm x 1000mm - £17.60

5mm
300mm x 700mm - £9.93
500mm x 1000mm - £20.58

10mm
500mm x 1000mm - £28.79

remember, that is for 20 sheets.

Thanks for the Heads up.

Sooo Nice that the form factor is DIFFERNET than depron. sigh ...
All cnc files used with this stuff will require a REwork, grrrrr

Regardless,
I JUST placed and order for 20 sheets of 5mm 500 x 1000 just to compare quality ,
Brittleness, Bendyness, dent resistance, packaging and order length till received.

1st off Shipping was almost as much as the Foam itself. Nearly 60%
MPF shipping is only about 30% the cost of the product.
Depron if bought in qty has a shipping cost of ~ 20%

Wouldn't it be easier to just GIVE AWAY the product and continue to over charge on the Shipping ?
That way they could take it off their taxes as gifts !

The rest will have to wait until received.

Start the Clock .... NOW !

I will hand this thread over to birdofplay.

you sir are amazing. It will be great to have your view on this product, as if it is any good, then i will be in sounder mind for knowing what i am ordering.

Knowing the product is half the battle.

OK, so for 1 box of 20 5mm x 300 x 700mm shipped is £19.84 shipping is £9.93 (100% value of item)...... still works out pretty cheap, but expensive on the shipping

Its great to know, that if you do give it the thumbs up BoP, it is another viable option for us. where depron.co.uk require a large order to even think of delivering, and the other place i get from is almost that for just 5 sheets of the same but 6mm thick.

If it's from the EU warehouse there shouldn't be any problems with customs thankfully.

Definitely interested to see how this stacks up quality wise to Depron. A quick price comparison:

Ebay: 20 sheets of 1250x800x6mm Depron (£60 shipped) - £3/m^2

HK: 20 sheets of 700x500x5mm foam (£20 shipped) - £2.85/m^2

Interesting, in terms of value per square meter the HK offering is barely ahead of Depron. You can get smaller quantities than 20 sheets on Ebay although I suspect they offer poorer value per sheet due to the shipping cost. It's still a lot of foam for £20 but for now I think I'll stick to Depron.

I'm sure that even Hobby King gets caught in the dimensional weight trap. I have had to deal with it in figuring out shipping for Model Plane Foam, and it got critical a year ago when all the major shippers started charging dimensional weight on all packages (prior to that, the domestic box squeaked under the 3cuft minimum and shipped for actual weight). The whole reason for the "international box" is it fits within the allowable size for Priority mail international. If it weren't for that option, international shipping would be several hundred dollars for a $50 box of foam and MPF would ship to US and Canada only.

Careful there, insomaniac45 !

I'm not amazing I'm just curious and willing to share whatever I find.

I just hope that this new foam will NOT be brittle like cellfoam 88 is.

Even if the new foam is just "OK" it will be a big boon to the UK builders who suffer under oppressive tax structures.

HOLY CRAP !!!
My HK foam arrived TODAY - THIS AM .

This was from the Jacksonville, AR warehouse to Indianapolis via FedEx.
Or about 475 miles ATCF. ( per Google Earth.)

A pleasant and SURPRISING discovery is that what I got is the SAME SIZE AS DEPRON !!!

I thought it was different when I ordered it. It still says 500mm x 1000mm but
what I got is 700mm x 1000mm .

I AM NOT COMPLAINING !

The carton was OVER-Wrapped with another 2 layers of cardboard and the
contents were in shrink wrapped plastic.

That's my report so far as I have to take it out to the shop for evaluation Next !

So far So good.

Well I have to say that the HK foam looks to be pretty OK.

When I stress tested ti to breaking it Popped as opposed to just a flex/rip or "soft" yield" like MPF
but it was slightly higher on my readings. Nothing to take to the bank.

It seems to be similar in formulation to MPF but without the waves.
Of course MPF is good stuff and gets hand picked for low/No waves
and it's made in the USA.

Only problem with MPF is the Mfgr only wants to do business at the Container Full level. OR Pallet stack in My case. sigh ...

Oh well see pix for my Bending results.
It bends Nicely with tape on one side, Just like the other foams
and those two bends in the pic are to check for grain.
I noticed very little of no difference in orientation.

If anyone wants to try this stuff on a Current model that I offer in Depron, then just write me and I'll knock off a couple of bucks of the regular price.

Best
