The big deal with having SD capability is that it allows easy interoperability with PCs.

Manufacturers can now release upgrades and new firmware.

Actually, they could also charge for added features. Like Airtronics used to with the expansion cards for the Stylus.

For the 8FG Futaba could charge $9.99 ($19.99?) for say a 'Sailplane pack.' That would include many more mixing options and features. They could release these digital 'upgrade packs' online for sale through a secure server.

Could be a new business model direction for radio manufacturers.

Exactly how does the software upgrade feature work on Futaba radios?

All you do is download the files from the update site, transfer them to your SD card and then insert the card in the TX.

Yeah I haven't done it yet, but my understanding is, the radio looks at the card for update files when it turns on... If update files are on the card, it will update the radio. Pretty simple setup I guess.

As for sizes... There are "issues" with SD cards over 1GB. Not all card readers can support all card sizes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card Scroll down to "compatibility issues with cards 2GB and larger.

I see from reading the Futaba info page that it appears to really be a 10 channel transmitter with Eight proportional channels and two switched channels. Am I reading this correctly? http://2.4gigahertz.com/systems/futk8000.html

I noticed the 8 channel has 5 point throttle and pitch curves for helis vs 7 point for the ten channel. I presently use a 7c and wonder what advantage 7 point have compared to 5 point? Is there a need for 7 point curves?

Probably depends on the individual. Most helicopter setups these days use linear curves and governors so they would fly the same with a 3, 5, or 7 point curve. I like the Futaba helicopter features but the number of curve points makes no difference to me.

If you were flying FAI competation without a governor I suppose that 7-points may be useful.

You will have a smoother curve if you have 7, 9 or 13 points instead of 5
and a 10C dont have only 7 points but it has 14 ( 7 points + 7 stick points )

I just downloaded the manual from ACE RC and I am very impressed. It is a more advanced radio than the 10C. It’s almost as good as the 12FG at a much lower price.
