Desination of sailplanes?

Hello;

I have been seeing the size as 2 meter, 3 meter and 4 meter's. Now back in the 70's, they went as this 2 meter, standard class and open/unlimited class. So, is 3 meter considered standard class, and 4 meter considered open/unlimited class.

Thank you

No. For competition, AMA still lists standard class (100" or less) though its not flown anymore and 2m has limited participation as well. The three classes (really four with HL at 60") now are really dominated by unlimited which is ANYTHING over 100" and any number of controls.

RC SOARING
441 Thermal Soaring–HL
442 Thermal Soaring— Two –Meter
443 Thermal Soaring— Standard
444 Thermal Soaring— Unlimited
460 RES Sailplane

RES (Rudder Elevator Spoiler) class can be separated into RES and WOODY (which is what Nostalgia has sort of morphed into)

The real classes are the FAI classes which generally separate and describe the tasks to be flown . Currently, these include

445* F3B Thermal Soaring (multitask) (which btw tend to be ~3m gliders)
446* F3H Cross Country
455* F3F Slope Soaring (generally very similar to F3B airframes)
456* F3J Thermal Duration Gliders (hand towing) (tend to be the 3.5m to 4.5m airframes)
462*F3K HL Glider

And the FAI classes seems to be basically limited by the wing area, wing load and maximum weight, not by wing span. This gives some interesting development and results.

Strictly speaking, Unlimited is ANY wingspan, any number of controls.

RC Soaring

441 HL Thermal Soaring
442 Thermal Soaring Two Meter
444 Thermal Soaring Unlimited
456 F3J
460 RES Function (RES)
461 Nostalgia (NOS)

These are the classes being flown at the Nationals this year.
I believe Cross Country is missing as an registered event but still being flown.

So, to sum up.

2M, Standard and Unlimited are competition designations. And as TK pointed out, unlimited means no limit. You can fly whatever size you want.

2M, 100", 2.5M, 3M, 4M, etc are dimensions, having nothing to do with competition. Designates the wing span.
