New landing tape

I decided to make a couple of new landing tapes, but have had poor luck writing on nylon web strap with a permanant marker like a Sharpie or Magic Marker.

I decided to try a fabric paint and it worked out great. The picture below is what it looks like when dry and ready to use. The paint does soak in a little, but not enough that you can't put a different marking on the other side. I marked this side with a point per inch up to 100 points and the other side is marked with a point per 20cm.

The last picture is of the type I used. The craft store had a whole bunch of different colors and brands. I did try a 3D fabric paint and it wanted to run a little like the marker, but not near as bad. The bottle has a really fine tip and you just gently squeeze it to get the paint out in a fine line

It's just 1" wide nylon webbing. Available on the internet for $.25 to .50 per foot depending on how much you buy.

This particular webbing is from an old landing tape that I had laying around due to its unreadability.

Duane Beck did send me a link to some that are commercially made by Tom Broeski
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1644010

They look pretty nice and are $28 + $2 shipping each or $50 for 2 delivered.

Watch the videos and you will understand. They are used for scoring landings in contests.

LANDING PRACTICE - This is how you get good!
Note that these guys tape their practice, probably so they can review and learn from what they did, to get even better.

Great landing tape material

Years ago, I made a set of landing tapes from nylon parachute straps as I was tired of skegs ripping up the ones made from lawn chair webbing. They were available in bright red and lasted a long, long time. The supplier even installed grommets for the stakes. Sorry, but I don't have that suppliers name.

You can get Nylon webbing on ebay for about $10 for 10 yards or polypropylene at about $10 for 50 yards. The poly webbing will work just fine.

I folded the end of mine over into thirds, put some stitches around it then put a 1/4" hole grommet in. I just used a standard sewing machine to put the stitches in. I used an old soldering iron to poke the hole. It will melt right through. You can get the grommet at the craft store in a kit with the tool for just a couple of bucks. This small size may be called a large eyelet instead of a grommet.

I know it's total overkill, being a 100 footer, but how about this fiberglass tape:

The first 100" should work for a point per inch tape.

I used these people when I had to make F3J tapes for the LSF a few years ago. Great stuff, won't stretch, takes a grommet well, a lighter will fuse the ends so it won't unravel.

Wow, 100 feet! You might want to work on your landing technique! Maybe try using spoilers?
