Indeed there is. The USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) is the third (and last) of the Seawolf-class subs. Carter is one of the very few presidents who had a ship named after him while still alive.

Carter was a naval academy graduate and served as a Communications Officer, Sonar Officer, Electronics Officer, Weapons Officer, and Supply Officer while on board the USS Pomfret (SS-391). He was the only US president to qualify for submarine duty.

Makes sense with Carter being a bubblehead/Navy man. I've got no problem with that.

But why did you choose not to mention the USS Reagan and only the "tiny" airport?

It's not uncommon for US naval ships to be named after US presidents. I simply don't see Reagan as having a significant historical role as did the Washingtons, Jeffersons, Lincolns, Roosevelts, Kennedys, LBJs. Nor do I recall any significant conservatives commenorated in history.

You don't believe that Ronald Reagan had as much of an impact on history as John Kennedy?

That's ridiculous on its face.

Isn't Google great? But what's your point? You don't think these men are being honored?

And yet that's exactly what he does. And the mantra is, Society or the State knows better than individuals, because its all so complex.

Which of course is exactly backwards.

Absolutely. I even think the sub for Carter is appropriate considering his service. What I can't figure out is why a Destroyer for Johnson, and only now.

Yes, personally, you toss out the penance of the social programs he passed near the end of his career and you have a power broker who had a lot of rather questionable acts, getting his Navy medal was interesting how that happened, as well as how his pilots of his private plane died. The guy was drunk with it.

I mean to read Robert A. Caro's books on Johnson, his book, the Power Broker on Robert Moses of NYC, is incredible. Really opened my eyes to a lot concerning power in the public sector.

What was the range of the Missouri's guns, 26 miles? I think I read these new ones are more than ten times that... and much much more accurate, and stealthy. Of course the budget was cut from the original DD-21, still they are around $1.5 billion each.

Interesting how they seem to mimic the old confederate ironclads.
