You might look into a Canon EOS 20D. It is an 8.2mp DSLR. Lots of lenses available, great features, and still has an automatic mode that will take great photos without a lot of user input needed if that is how you want to take photos. Worth a look.....

For your wife, I would get the EOS rebel XT over the cannon 20D or 10D the 10D and 20D are very heavy compared to the rebel XT. The new rebel XT is smaller and lighter. My wife just got the Rebel XT and it fits her hands much better as it is smaller. Since it is lighter, it affords more opportunity to take it more places as it is not a brick you are hauling around.
It uses the same lenses as the 20D and 10D and has the same processor as the 20D, so no loss in quality there. We just bought it at costco.com as they had a package with the 18-55, and 70-300, and a cannon printer for like 1100-1200, and right now cannon has single, double, and triple rebates, after rebates, we got all of the above for like $899, and a costco never ending return policy if somthing goes wrong with it.
My wife looked both the rebel xt, and the 20D. She about crapped her pants when she picked up the 20D as it was so heavy. She said it reminded her of the cell phones from the early 80's (Brick phones). :-)
Good luck with your choice.

The Rebel XT is a nice camera for the money if you want to get an SLR. Of course, you're talking about quite a bit over $500 and personally I wouldn't even give space in my camera bag for the kit lens (meaning you should really buy something better to replace it with).
The alternative would be an SLR-like camera, say a Sony DSC-R1 or one of the many others in this category.
Personally I prefer real SLRs with their inter-changable lenses, but then I do some paid photography work and I'm a keen amateur photographer.
Take a look at dpreview. It's better for the higher end stuff than Steve's Digicams, although both sites are very useful.
